I have a 2002 Ford Ranger 2.3L, manual transmission. I'm pretty sure this is the right forum but, being new to RPS, I apologize in advance if I dropped this in the wrong location.

Anyway, on to my problem. Here recently, my check engine light came on with error code P1537. The error message from a scan indicates:

Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Open (bank 1)

From all the research I've done and with the minimal amount of information I've been able to find, I've determined that my IMRC valve is either stuck open from build-up, one of the plastic retainers broke off, or the IMRC itself has gone bad.

The problem? There's not a lot of information on the internet about IMRC in general. I've asked two mechanics and the first thing both of them said was "Do you mean EGR?" ... And, just about everything I've found (including the only pictures) are for late 90's model Ford Windstars.

A search on Froogle for "imrc ford", in a last ditch effort to find a picture, reveals only 3 results. Only one is an IMRC for a 2000 Ford Escort, and I can't find anything that looks like that.

I've looked high and low for pictures of the part just to get a general idea of what it looks like or whereabouts in the engine compartment it could be. With my mechanics option exhausted, I decided to hunt down people that specifically own Rangers and may have experienced this problem before or run into something similar.

Is it actually in the intake manifold? Is it somewhere way off underneath that I won't be able to easily see without doing some tear down? If someone with experience in IMRC could give me a general idea or where to look, it would be much appreciated.

Given the amount of hours I've spent on this just doing research, you'd think it would be cheaper in terms of man hours just to take it to the dealership. :(

i paid $10 after taxes for a 7-day membership to HelmInc.com and was able to access the Ford service manuals. That was the best investment I have ever made after buying my ranger. I saved as many pages on to my hard drive as a could. But, I could not save the wiring diagrams.

Iam sure whatever it is your looking for you will find in a Ford Service Manual
