So a local shop installed my Hurst shifter incorrectly, caused an oil leak, that I didn't check enough, and my trans pretty much ran dry of fluid. Last week it kicked the bucket... very loudly I might add, and now I've got the shop to provide the labour free of charge for the swap, but they won't replace the trans. I've tracked down a couple for $250Cdn but I have a few questions. Its a 94 2wd 5spd truck, with the Mazda tranny... whats the code for that trans, and will I find that stamped into it somewhere? Is there a better alternative trans I may want to look into? A friend @ school has an 88 Ranger with the 2.8 V6, and told me I could get that trans for $100Cdn... would that be the same trans?

Any info you can provide would be helpful.

It is going to be a M5R1 tranny. I dunno if it is stamped on it. They still use the same tranny to this day. However I don't know what years you can use.

You can use any 2.3/2.5L 4 cylinder tranny up to 2001.5.

After 97, you'd have to swap tailshafts to make your speedo cable work with the tranny. Up to that, either plug in or 95-laters have a plug to pop out to put the cable into, I believe.

I removed the engine & trans last weekend, as I have a deposit on the 2.3L..........

The tag on this trans is: F27A-UA

I am able to put it on a pallet if you want to ship it, R&L, AAA Cooper, & Southern come through all the time.

I got a tranny local for $250 Canadian, and its been installed. My hurst shifter no longer makes any noise at all... the change is amazing. Anyway the trucks working great, thanks for the help.
