Ok everyone. After doing a lot of searching through a lot of resources, I have come to the conclusion that the VSS needs replaced.

HISTORY: Last year, I got cut off by a semi and long story short, ended up breaking off 3 teeth on the rear-end trying to stop from hitting him. Had the rear-end rebuilt and decided not to replace the VSS at that time (stupid on my part). Now its doing the whole ordeal; ABS light and goofy speedo above 70.

PROBLEM: Everywhere I go, I keep trying to be sold a VSS for an electric speedometer. Only problem is that my 99 doesn't have one. I would just go ahead and use but the connectors are completely different and there is no way to even make it work. So with that being said, I have a couple of questions: (1) Why can't I find the right VSS? (2) How hard is it to replace the VSS myself? I have tried to take it out a couple of times thinking that I could just take it to the parts store and they could match it. I can't get it out. (3) Is it possible that I need a VSS for a different year? When I installed my head-unit, I actually ended up having to use a harness kit for a 2000 because none of the other harnesses matched mine.

Thanks again everyone for all the help!

you sure your speedo sensor on the rear isn'st messed up. the VSS is on the transmission.

I was under the impression that the VSS had the ABS sensor and the speedo sensor all in one located on the rear diff.

98~2000 Rangers use the ABS sensor on the diff to supply the VSS signal. It is easy to remove and easy to replace. I would go to a Ford dealer and get the right part.

BTW, your speedometer is definitely electric.

ok guys. thats what i thought. the only problem is that the part i got from the dealer looks absolutly nothing like the one on the top of the pumpkin.

Are you sure that the axle was rebuilt and not swapped from a different year/model?

If you're sure, go back to the dealer and tell them to get the correct sensor. If the axle is a stock 99 Ranger part, then they can get the right part.

This is what the ABS differential speed sensor should look like. According to what I found, it has not changed from 1992 to 2007. A Ford dealer gets about $25 for it. This replacement looks like the stocker and is sold by Rockauto.com for $7.50 plus shipping.

http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/norm/smp-sc46_w_m.jpgThat's for an older Ranger. Technically speaking, your Ranger doesn't even have a VSS sensor. Tell them that you want a rear axle ABS sensor like that one I posted above and don't even mention the VSS.

ok guys. thanks. and that rear abs sensor is the one thats causing the speedo to fluctuate above 70 and obviously its causing the abs light
