I have a '93 Ford Ranger 2wd with the 5speed manual and I need help diagnosing a transmission problem.

For a while I noticed a whine in all gears, but especially 3rd and 5th, when coasting. Then it started popping out of 3rd gear, and progressed to doing the same in 1st. Today it got locked in 4th for awhile, but eventually unlocked itself(nothing I did could get it out).

So, any ideas what my problem is? The truck is not my primary transportation therefor I will attempt the fix myself, so any advice/insight on how to go about the repair would be great.

My 95 pops out of third too. My stepfather thinks it may be a bent shift fork, or worn gears or servos, haven't had a chance to fix yet, just telling you what I've heard

Sounds like you have terrible transimission problems.

Sounds like the gears have established a bad wear pattern, probably from the bearings going bad.

Then it started popping out of 3rd gear, and progressed to doing the same in 1st.

This is your brass rings on your syncho's giving up the go, not staying fully engaged in the blocker rings which keeps the tranny in gear.

This could be from bad synco's and blocker rings but could be from worn shift forks as well.

Sounds like you need a complete transmission overhaul or at least someone knowledgable to tear it down and look at it. I can give you this advise, its cheaper to get a used M5OD then it is to have one rebuilt, depending on the amount of repair. The bearings alone in this transmission are over $450. Sounds like yours is pretty bad. Later Doug904.
