View Full Version : Locks of Love
emgriggs887 Jun 15 2007, 02:15am WHAT IS LOCKS OF LOVE?
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.
I'm just starting to grow my hair, but hopefully be able to donate by the end of the year.
Locks Of Love.org (http://www.locksoflove.org/)
Donated hair is evaluated for its usefulness according to the following guidelines:
The donated hair must be at least 10 inches (preferably 12") in length
It must be bundled in a pony tail or braid
Hair must be free of bleach. Colored hair and permed is acceptable.
The hair must be clean and dry, placed in a plastic bag, and mailed in a padded envelope to:
Locks of Love
2925 10th Avenue N., Suite 102
Lake Worth, FL 33461
Monetary donations to Locks of Love are tax-deductible. Donated hair that is not suitable for use in children's hairpieces may be sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing.

Gunman Jun 15 2007, 02:24pm Great charity! my wife donated her hair before her first go-round with chemo. She figured she was going to lose it, so someone else should get some good from it.
Mine just doesn't seem to grow past a certain point...must be falling out faster than it grows!
94ranger355 Jun 15 2007, 02:43pm I've donated 3 times myself over the past 15yrs since the end of my military career:naughty: ...........
1st time was 13" long
2nd time was 15" long
3rd time was 18" long
and now it comes in so straggly, I don't even attempt it anymore........guess my age is finally catchin up with me:mind-blow
RangerJustin Jun 15 2007, 02:50pm i actually just decided to grow mine out again...it takes a little over a year for me to get to a good enough amount to donate...
Zeros Jun 15 2007, 06:16pm Actually, I'm growing out my hair over my college years. Right now after my freshman year in college its at about 13" maybe a bit more. So by the time my four or five years (maybe more if I decide to go for my CPA and masters) are over I'm going to have alot of hair to donate =).
emgriggs887 Jun 15 2007, 07:02pm sounds good, unfortunatley I shaved my head just over a month ago, so I have some growing to do, I should be at minimum length(10") by the end of the year.
emgriggs887 Jun 16 2007, 12:03am just measured my hair, I'm at just over 2 inches, but my hair grows pretty quick so I'll get there. about 2 inches in just over a month, hypothetically I could have 10 inches by November.
emgriggs887 Jun 16 2007, 07:28pm My girlfriend is donating to, her hair is already about 15 inches, so she'll be cutting off about 11 inches soon
emgriggs887 Jun 17 2007, 09:12pm Just an update from lock of love for all of you that have donated in the past, or are planning to donate soon

pinellas50 Jun 18 2007, 06:41am Some good friends of ours have a 6 year old daughter who just cut and donated her hair. The little girl wanted to do what she could to help other kids. Pretty cool stuff!
emgriggs887 Jun 18 2007, 08:31am That's the kind of thing I love to hear, I wish more kids(and adults for that matter) had that kind of selflessness in them.
emgriggs887 Jun 18 2007, 10:34pm trying to put together a hair cutting event in the Allentown, PA area, let me know if your interested.
emgriggs887 Jun 20 2007, 03:08am Unviersity of Miami
For 2006 & 2007, Locks of Love has awarded a combined total of $500,000 to the Unviersity of Miami Department of Dermatology to fund research into alopecia areata. Portions of the grants will fund studies to be conducted with a new excismer laser. Mice who naturally develop alopecia in 20% of their popualtion will afford the scientists their first study group. In addition, approval for treatment in 30 patients has already been received. The gift will also establish an endowment to conduct symposiums on the research findings. With these grants, Locks of Love is expanding its focus in hopes of new treatment possibilities for our recipients.
KIDS & TEENAGERS-SHARE YOUR LOCKS OF LOVE STORY IN A BOOK!
Simon & Goodman Picture Company is also putting together a book of letters and photos by children and teenagers (donors and recipients) about their feelings of giving and receiving through Locks of Love. You can write about how you became involved, what it's meant to you, what was easy or hard and anything else you want to share. And if you have "before and after" pictures, they'd love to see them too.
Send to Simon & Goodman Picture Company, 2095 Broadway, Suite 402, New York, NY 10023 Attention: Nina, or e mail to locksoflovebook@mac.com.

Atrocity Nov 26 2009, 09:15pm My school has a drive once a year that generates around 10 girls on average to donate hair. I dont want to sound like an ass but we were told that Locks of Love is a sham, they sell the whigs they make out of donated hair to the children that need it.
