View Full Version : My twin turbo v8 ranger

fastranger347
Dec 21 2007, 08:04am
This is my twin turbo 347 ranger, im just gonna give ya a brief overview of what changes i made to the truck to acommodate the turbo package, in its present state it was a used coast high streetfighter shortblock with used ford j302 heads, having 10-1 compression, it wouldnt like to much boost on pump gas so i lowered it by installing a cometic .065 head gasket, the drivetrain is a ford aod with full manual valve body, transbrake, and switchable overdrive. the back of the truck consists of a 97 explorer rear that i chopped in the basement (i dont own a garage) along with moser axles, aluminum diff support and 3.90 gears. Feeding fuel to the engine is a A1000 pump and 1/2 " parker pushlock full hose pulling gas from a jegs 16 gallon fuel cell with gm sending unit

first i started by moving the steering shaft by inserting a third knuckle to make room for the flipped shorty headers that i picked up cheap on ebay, these are before and after photos

Everything for this turbo project was purchased off of ebay. everything was cheap, the quality does appear excellent and component failure has been non existant as of yet. that not to say it wont happen but i may upgrade to turbos some time next year, this is my cost break down.

2 61mm t4 turbos shipped- 500
2 38mm wastegates -120
1 50mm bov -70
1 water to air i/c -165
universal i/c pipe kits
2.5" and 3" -120
mustang 1 5/8 headers
new in box -90
t4 turbo flanges -15

this is my mock up engine on a stand in the basement, all my fitment was done a head of time so i knew it would drop right on to the engine in the truck

the reassembled engine, along with the i/c piping and couplings and the water to air intercooler and my lowered alternator mount, keeping it all cool is a budget griffen radiator and a taurus 2 speed fan that i got from a u pull it for 10$

Awsome write up! Thank you! I'll sticky it soon.

Oh. I also have to add that you are a master fabricator and welder in my book. How you could have built all that on an engine stand and it just dropped right in is beyond me!

Mid 7's in the 1/8 should be well into the 11's in the quarter I believe.

its a 100% street truck, over 200,000 on the clock and yes i drive it in the rain, i have no issues driving it 2 or 3 hours from home, and i put that engine into boost on a regular basis with out any issues while feeding it 92 octane pump gas.

made the grill from a factory grill and an aero star inner piece, used epoxy/fiberglass/bondo, its starting to crack out at the joints after 10 years so it might be time to make something different

That's the nicest looking grille I've ever seen on a Gen I Ranger, GREAT job fabbing it up!!! I'd say 10 years is a pretty good run, I'd be for fixing it myself although I'd also like to see what else you come up with... VERY nice!!!

alright guys i pulled the engine, welded and painted the firewall and front support, put on a new set of heads and plumbed a parker funnelweb for 8 120lb injectors and installed a low ohm injector driver, rewired all of the engine compartment and claybared the exterior of the truck im just waiting on some stainless panels to cover the wiring on the fender wells and its done for right now

Truck looks good as always. I though I read somewhere you were going with a bigger motor?

fastranger347
Sep 08 2008, 05:45am
was considering it but with the current artificial manipulation and inflation of oil futures i decided it was wise just to make my existing combo more efficient, notice im not bitchin about gas prices, as im responcible for putting a twin turbo v8 in my ranger but im merely trying to make my engine more efficient.

Oct 04 2008, 08:23pm
Very very nice.

Im wanting to do something similar in the future. I thought about mounting the turbos in the front corners, and then using a 2 in 1 out a/a intercooler, and then coming up over the top of the core support into the intake.

havent been on for a while, ruptured a disc in my back, um dont have times or video yet and dont know if i will this year, night be going in for an operation, had a problem with the aod, burned up third gear, sent it back to art carr and they are going to rebuild the whole thing and flog it on they're in house dyno and try to find any weaknesses at no cost to me, its not very often that a company actually stands behind a "race only" item thats been abuse by a twin turbo v8, i'll continue to due bussiness with them in the future.

Quick question. I also have a gen I ranger and I'm planning on investing in a cowl hood. How big is your cowl and where did you get it from. Also I'm planning on doing the twin turbo setup on my ranger eventually. Right now I'm just running a 351W and planning on next year 4 linking it and then in pry 2 years building something turboed.
