View Full Version : My twin turbo v8 ranger
fastranger347 Dec 21 2007, 08:04am This is my twin turbo 347 ranger, im just gonna give ya a brief overview of what changes i made to the truck to acommodate the turbo package, in its present state it was a used coast high streetfighter shortblock with used ford j302 heads, having 10-1 compression, it wouldnt like to much boost on pump gas so i lowered it by installing a cometic .065 head gasket, the drivetrain is a ford aod with full manual valve body, transbrake, and switchable overdrive. the back of the truck consists of a 97 explorer rear that i chopped in the basement (i dont own a garage) along with moser axles, aluminum diff support and 3.90 gears. Feeding fuel to the engine is a A1000 pump and 1/2 " parker pushlock full hose pulling gas from a jegs 16 gallon fuel cell with gm sending unit

fastranger347 Dec 21 2007, 08:11am first i started by moving the steering shaft by inserting a third knuckle to make room for the flipped shorty headers that i picked up cheap on ebay, these are before and after photos

Trooper Thorn Dec 21 2007, 08:13am Wow, that rules.
fastranger347 Dec 21 2007, 08:15am now im gonna start to move pretty fast thru the pictures, this is the rear with the chopped axle, fuel cell and 315/35/17 sumitomo tires on 10.5 cobra wheels

taknotes Dec 21 2007, 08:16am killer man
That truck is just sick !
fastranger347 Dec 21 2007, 08:29am Everything for this turbo project was purchased off of ebay. everything was cheap, the quality does appear excellent and component failure has been non existant as of yet. that not to say it wont happen but i may upgrade to turbos some time next year, this is my cost break down.
2 61mm t4 turbos shipped- 500
2 38mm wastegates -120
1 50mm bov -70
1 water to air i/c -165
universal i/c pipe kits
2.5" and 3" -120
mustang 1 5/8 headers
new in box -90
t4 turbo flanges -15
this is my mock up engine on a stand in the basement, all my fitment was done a head of time so i knew it would drop right on to the engine in the truck

fastranger347 Dec 21 2007, 08:40am the reassembled engine, along with the i/c piping and couplings and the water to air intercooler and my lowered alternator mount, keeping it all cool is a budget griffen radiator and a taurus 2 speed fan that i got from a u pull it for 10$

fastranger347 Dec 21 2007, 08:57am im sure i neglected to mention alot of small items that were neccessary but you get the point.some other pictures can be taken and posted if needed
turbonator2.3 Dec 21 2007, 09:01am wow sweet looking truck how fast she run in the 1/4 now man
fastranger347 Dec 21 2007, 09:05am havent run it in the 1/4 withthe turbo yet, my 1/8 is in the mid 7's @ around 100mph, it wont pass tech for the quarter without a cage
Trooper Thorn Dec 21 2007, 09:31am Looking at these pictures has made me hate you.
pinellas50 Dec 21 2007, 09:56am Awsome write up! Thank you! I'll sticky it soon.
Oh. I also have to add that you are a master fabricator and welder in my book. How you could have built all that on an engine stand and it just dropped right in is beyond me!
Mid 7's in the 1/8 should be well into the 11's in the quarter I believe.
fastranger347 Dec 21 2007, 10:39am its a 100% street truck, over 200,000 on the clock and yes i drive it in the rain, i have no issues driving it 2 or 3 hours from home, and i put that engine into boost on a regular basis with out any issues while feeding it 92 octane pump gas.
I love it!
Awesome job, would be lovely to see a vid of that thing running!
lobo'sranger Dec 21 2007, 12:01pm Yes! Video Please!!!
fastranger347 Dec 21 2007, 12:11pm dont have videos of runs withthe turbos but have N/A runs in the video section on here, im gonna be laid up for a little so maybe after i get ok'd to drive again i might have someone video me doin a burnout or somethin
Evilranger Dec 21 2007, 12:27pm What rpms u looking at when them bad boys start to spool?? probably sounds effing awesome
fastranger347 Dec 21 2007, 01:07pm begin to spool at 3 grand and have full boost by 3,300-3,500 rpm depending on engine temp
RangerRaider Dec 21 2007, 01:18pm Yeah, definitely TOTM. Nice work.
rangersplash2.3 Dec 21 2007, 04:08pm as peter griffin would say... "FREAKIN SWEET!"
I got to tell you, I had a chubby looking at those pics.
Two_Tone Dec 21 2007, 04:51pm The holy grail man, that's actually my exact plan (just won't be for a couple years). Definately let us know if or when you get some numbers, dyno or track man.
fastranger347 Dec 21 2007, 05:11pm just gettin it done is most of the battle, alot of people toss the idea around but no one ever does it
Foxracin Dec 21 2007, 06:00pm I seen it over on v8 ranger a couple times and that thing in sweet as ever. Id love to have it.
93Ranger Dec 21 2007, 09:32pm :clapclap: WOW that thing is awsome good job on it hope it was fun puting it together i love it just an awsome job
ben_2_go Dec 21 2007, 10:42pm Was it a pain in the rear to get the carb to take boost without going lean?
OutlawRanger Dec 21 2007, 11:00pm AWESOME! Good looking truck with power!
fastranger347 Dec 22 2007, 08:14am holley projection- fuel injection, i tune it with the wide band o2. 12.2 at wot and 14.7 at cruise

Ranger0n20sss Mar 26 2008, 06:04pm holy Toledo how the hell did i miss this thread???? Awesome truck man!!!! just AWESOME! x2 on burnout vid!
Black P-38 Apr 17 2008, 11:49pm AWESOME TRUCK!!! Nice work...must sound Freakin' BADD!!!
LOVE the grille, where did you get it???
Mike
fastranger347 Apr 18 2008, 06:53am made the grill from a factory grill and an aero star inner piece, used epoxy/fiberglass/bondo, its starting to crack out at the joints after 10 years so it might be time to make something different
mustang66maniac Apr 18 2008, 09:06am Yeah....well my truck gets better gas mileage! So there!! :E
Black P-38 Apr 18 2008, 10:47pm That's the nicest looking grille I've ever seen on a Gen I Ranger, GREAT job fabbing it up!!! I'd say 10 years is a pretty good run, I'd be for fixing it myself although I'd also like to see what else you come up with... VERY nice!!!
Mike
fastranger347 Sep 07 2008, 07:31pm alright guys i pulled the engine, welded and painted the firewall and front support, put on a new set of heads and plumbed a parker funnelweb for 8 120lb injectors and installed a low ohm injector driver, rewired all of the engine compartment and claybared the exterior of the truck im just waiting on some stainless panels to cover the wiring on the fender wells and its done for right now

Foxracin Sep 07 2008, 07:43pm Truck looks good as always. I though I read somewhere you were going with a bigger motor?
fastranger347 Sep 08 2008, 05:45am was considering it but with the current artificial manipulation and inflation of oil futures i decided it was wise just to make my existing combo more efficient, notice im not bitchin about gas prices, as im responcible for putting a twin turbo v8 in my ranger but im merely trying to make my engine more efficient.
mikethejackal Oct 04 2008, 01:20pm wow, man that's bad@$$. beautiful truck. any hp, or new 1/8th mile #'s yet?
Adam Baker Oct 04 2008, 08:23pm Very very nice.
Im wanting to do something similar in the future. I thought about mounting the turbos in the front corners, and then using a 2 in 1 out a/a intercooler, and then coming up over the top of the core support into the intake.
Fordranger1998 Oct 24 2008, 04:29pm got any videos of this this running yet
fastranger347 Oct 25 2008, 09:44am havent been on for a while, ruptured a disc in my back, um dont have times or video yet and dont know if i will this year, night be going in for an operation, had a problem with the aod, burned up third gear, sent it back to art carr and they are going to rebuild the whole thing and flog it on they're in house dyno and try to find any weaknesses at no cost to me, its not very often that a company actually stands behind a "race only" item thats been abuse by a twin turbo v8, i'll continue to due bussiness with them in the future.
Foxracin Oct 25 2008, 03:33pm Man that sucks. Best of luck with the back.
I have heard lots of good stuff about Art Carr.
bikerboy Oct 25 2008, 04:04pm Nice truck! Seriously dude that thing is wicked awesome! And the best part is that you are located in York,PA. I'm located in Lancaster,PA. I want to see the thing, go for a drive, look from a distance, or anything. Let me know maybe we can meet up somewhere. best wishes with your back.
Ford Fanatic Oct 25 2008, 07:49pm What track do you run at?
fastranger347 Oct 29 2008, 05:59am i usually run 1/8 at south mountain, now called quater aceses dragstrip, but just couldnt get a run fit in this year, should have the tranny back either the end of this week or the beginning of next, well bikerboy i'll give you a ring when i get it goin, you know i drive this in the rain and snow right?
bikerboy Nov 01 2008, 06:22pm Are you serious? How bad is it to drive in the rain and snow?
tensecranger Nov 06 2008, 10:01pm man this is nice bro keep up the good work
86ranger351w Nov 06 2008, 10:05pm Quick question. I also have a gen I ranger and I'm planning on investing in a cowl hood. How big is your cowl and where did you get it from. Also I'm planning on doing the twin turbo setup on my ranger eventually. Right now I'm just running a 351W and planning on next year 4 linking it and then in pry 2 years building something turboed.
GofastJnkie Nov 11 2008, 06:49pm thats what I thought 5 years ago  still getting parts!! $$ Dam school bills and books!

Adam Baker Sep 27 2009, 01:02pm Wow man, it just keeps getting better & better.
I might finally have a ranger available to do something like this, but its still a few years away from being able to have something like this done to it, mainly b/c it would take that long to have the money, haha.
