Hey guys, I am new here. I am a Moderator at competitiondiesel.com, and I am also currelty building a 2000 ranger with a "highly" modified 6.0 Diesel. I will have a bunch of
Questions for you guys I am sure. I know that the Spal Ranger has a 6.0 in it, but this is very different, as its just for the strip. I know a bunch of you guys are doing conversions, but which of you are doing high HP conversions?

Thanks, and Yes, I am for real, here is a link to the project.

Ok I'll bite...

With all the troubles Ford had with the 6.0... why use it and not a 7.3L???

Cool project by the way. :)

Yeah, Austin Texas, actually I am in North Austin, Cedar park area, right by Leander.

Ok I'll bite...

With all the troubles Ford had with the 6.0... why use it and not a 7.3L???

Cool project by the way. :)

Well the 6.0's major problems were/are:

1. Injectors
2. Head Gasket problems
3. EGR issues.

My 03 6.0 is making over 550 at the rear wheels on Fuel, and close to 700 with an .83 shot of NOS.

The injector issue is not an issue for me as Ryan Casserly of Full force diesel is making a set of 430, (hybrid) injectors.

The headgasket issues are mostly solved with ARP gaskets and removing the exhaust gasses through the EGR cooler.

The egr issues are not going to be a problem, since it is completely removed on this motor.

The 6.0 is making a lot more power than the 7.3's are, and finally, I had a 6.0 sitting around. Also I am going to be spinning it at around 5500-6000 RPM's which is much easier to do on the 6.0 as long as you use billet rods, which I have.:naughty:

would this truck fit into the sanctioned class at the Banks sidewinder cummins? totally random question.....

anyway, I'm glad to see someone is actually doin this swap on rps. We get TONS of "what if someone stuffed a powerstroke into a ranger" posts.

Well, the Banks Sidewinder is built and supported by millions of dollars. My truck is built and supported by.........well, me:thumbsup: so I will not be running the same numbers as the banks guys. In the diesel Community, Banks is a joke. They jave run some great times, but the products they offer to the general public is less than stellar, and 2x the price. I will be running it NADM, DHRA, and ODRA pro street.

Jan 26 2008, 10:51pm
Kool project,

How do you plan on getting all that power to the ground?

Well it will be back halved with a ford 9" rearend, and 4 link suspension, (fully tunable), through a built tranny, (not sure what yet, either John Wood, or Suncoast), and connected to MT 31x16.5 15 drag slicks. SHould be good for 9's, but I really hate to predict.

THanks for the warm reception you guys. I picked up a 12 gallon fuel cell last night, and am feverishly looking for a new bed and an aftermarket hood. I really like this hood, and think it is an aeroform, but can't find it anywhere.

Any suggestions? I've sent him a PM and hopefully he will get back to me.

that's nitemareranger's truck...or was i think. It's on Mautofied.com....

whoops...just found out it was traded away.

I'm assuming you want a fiberglass one, for weight reasons?

If a 3rd gen hood will fit on your fourth gen, this guy makes a small cowl hood:

http://www.church-steeples.com/auto.htm

and if you can do some repair work:

there was only one aftermarket cowl style hood made for your year truck made by reflexxions and it was dicontinued. There is another hood with a fake scoop in the middle made by goodhood (I think) but I'm not sure if they still make that one either. Your best bet to make something custom or graft a cowl onto a stock hood.

Jan 27 2008, 03:27pm
Thanks, yeah the motor is a complete rebuild and is down to bare block. Its bored 40 over and has 25 thousanths Reduced compression height, and some mild cam work. It has an external LPOP system, and will have 430 injectors and a modified HPOP until someone makes a good aftermarket one. The heads are ported and polished as is the intake, (until I can custom make one). A complete valve job and upgraded springs. I'm looking for 900 HP and 1500 Tq. I Know of on built similar that laid down 917 HP with fuel only at the rear wheels. My 03 F-250 6.0 is putting out 550 on fuel and close to 700 and 1400 TQ on nos, and thats with stock internals. The Ranger has Billet rods from Crower, and I am gonna spin it up to 5500-6000 with a twin turbo setup.

What front end are you planning to run? 1998-2000, 2001-2003, 2004-2005, or 2006+? The hoods are interchangeableble for 1998-2003. Also interchangeable 2004+. I would do a 2006+ upgrade for the freshest look.

As for hood though, not much of anything for late rangers, especially the 2004+. I plan to have company over by Chicago do a custom fiberglass hood for mine. It will be a medium cowl with a quick kickup for clearance to the supercharger pulley. Maybe I can have them do 2 at the same time for a cost savings???

Its has the original 2000 front end, and thats fine. I might be interested in the hood, it really comes down to cost VS weight.

Here is the front end now. ANyone care to swap out a paintable grill for the billet one here?

I don't want to be captain obvious here but why would you NOT use a 5.9l Cummins? Sorry to say but the Cummins can take way more power stock than a 6.0 stock.

dalpilot
Jan 27 2008, 08:23pm
Well, A. Because thats been done, B. I am a ford guy and wanted a "Ford" engine, (ok International, but it came in a Ford). and C. I had a 6.0 laying around and know more about it than anything.

There is actually a lot more room than you think. Remember, no AC system, or anything else "Non-Essential" under the hood. The turbo's will take some custom work, but it'll fit. It might be a big ass hoodscoop, but we'll get them in there. The engine and tranny is gonna be about 1200#'s Its heavy!

I am gonna try to make it "Street leagl", but honestly with the injector size, (430cc) and the huge turbo's it won't be very practical for the street, and it will leave a cloud of smoke for a week everytime it takes off. Next year there are gonna be some v-6 diesels coming out for the 1/2 ton applications. That is gonna be something to watch very close. Its very doable, google the spal ranger, but it takes a whole bunch of stuff.

Well its official, TCI will be building a 5r-110 with full billet internals and increased frictions with a Billet Torque converter for the Truck. Its being shipped off right now. TCI is huge into racing http://tciauto.com/ and is stepping into the diesel market. I am going to be the first to run/test their 5r110. It says a whole bunch about the confidence in their abilities when they decide to test the first one behind one of the highest HP and Tq 6.0's. If I can't brake it at the track, I guess it should stand up behind a daily driver making much less. THanks for the support and confidence TCI!

Went out yesterday to Genes shop, and Mike Dilehay, (DHRA quick diesel 07 champ), showed up and we worked on the Ranger for quite a while. It now has nothing from the cab back, and the back half frame is ready to be welded on.
http://www.competitiondiesel.com/forums/photo/data/500/Ranger_back.jpg
http://www.competitiondiesel.com/forums/photo/data/500/Ranger_back2.jpg

Also we took the dash out to get to the AC box and windsheild wipers, and after we saw how much it weighed, about 125 LBS we decided to get rid of it altogether and will run an aluminum dash.

http://www.competitiondiesel.com/forums/photo/data/500/Ranger_dash.jpg

Ran into a major snag with the front of the Frame. In order to lower it further, (the prvious owner had it lowered) the lower part of the frame was notched considerably to clear the lower control arms. There is no way to fix it, except either get a new front clip, or go to a tube chasis. We are gonna try to find a new front clip monday, but its a major setback and will probably delay its debut a month.

Feb 12 2008, 10:26pm
So the truck is being built in California? I had assumed it was being built locally to where you are at in the Austin area.

dalpilot
Feb 12 2008, 10:53pm
Well the Engine is being built here, but the chassis work of this level is waaaaay above my head. A fellow moderator at our site happens to own the worlds fastest, (currently) powerstroke, and he built it from the ground up. He goes by Weweld as a username, and he is maticulous. He offered to do the heavy chassis work,a nd has the shop to do it. I am a pilot, so I can travel for free, and it is not that big of a deal to go out to LA a few times a month. When its done it will stay here in Austin most off the time. During the season it will spend a lot of the time in the ALabama, KY, TN Georgia area since that is where the majority of the major events are. But it will be here in Austin the rest of the time.

dalpilot
Feb 16 2008, 11:53pm
Well I hit a Major Snag with the frame. Basically its toast, and I am left with few options. The truck I have been working on was a freebie, and I cannot thank the person that donated it enough, but there is sooooo much wrong with it, (frame, passenger door, floor panel, color, etc.....) that its gonna be a fortune to make it the way I want it. SOOOOOO when I get home Wednesday I am buying this:
http://www.competitiondiesel.com/forums/photo/data/500/Ranger.jpg

I already went and looked at it, and its in really good shape. a few small dents in the back, but not hard to fix. I am only out time on the other truck....and 400.00 worth of front frame section......LOng story. This is a complete truck, 62K miles, and the color I want for the truck. Obviously it is a huge change, and almost like starting over, but this will be what I originally had envisioned. The interior will stay, the seats will change and a 10 point cage is going in, but it will look sharp. I can have it torn apart to back halve in a day, so its not a major hiccup. I will be selling most of everything I take out, so if anyone needs anything let me know. ALl of the drive train, radiator, ac, seat, wheels, rear end.....ETC. Anyway, just thought I would post an update. I feel good about it, cause its gonna look like an everyday Ranger, just bad ass.

BluRanger8
Feb 18 2008, 12:24am
Are you beefing up the stock frame or custom building the front end? The Edge frame (same as 4x4) is a little narrower between the rails and may not give you as much room as you'd like, although it should be easier to modify since it doesn't wrap around the coil springs like the 2wd frame.

dalpilot
Feb 18 2008, 01:31am
The 6.0 is not all that much heavier than a 5.0. Its 900 pounds. You take out the AC stuff, and its not much more. The frame will have a 12 point cage, so that will stiffen it up a bunch. The SPAL ranger has the same motor with no modifications to the frame, and only some "clearance marks" for the exhaust down pipe. It went 215 so I figure I should be ok. LOL

Is thhere a drop available for the edge with the Tbar front end at all?

dalpilot
Feb 18 2008, 11:29am
Log book.......Yeah, I might need to update that some day. I am 38, and haven't put anything in it since I was 32. LOL Its all kept in the computer at work now. I haven't the slightest idea how many hours I have anymore. Over 1500 in the 757/767.

I am simply waiting on the rods from crower, that will be here sometime this month, then the motor will go together pretty quick. All the parts are here except the rods, so I would assume I should have the motor together a week after the rods get in. I won't dyno it till its in the truck. I could care less about the flywheel power, I want to measure at the wheels. FOr now I am gonna get it together with a single turbo, and get it down the track, and see where I am at. After, I can start to play with this and that, and set it up as a twin.

How much can you drop the front end with the tbar? I am thinking its gonna need about 4", I cannot imagine there is that much play using the bolt.

dalpilot
Feb 18 2008, 12:07pm
Are there any negatives in steering or roll. Remember, I plan on hitting 150 in the 1/4. It looks like from seeing oyurs, that I can get the front end dropped, what 5"?

MR 130
Feb 18 2008, 02:58pm
no issuses what so ever at 120+ talk to robert ray69

i would tell you that with that weight get a set of A code t-bars there in the expo 4X4 5.0 there the stiffiest you can get and with the drop the ride will still be ok with that weight.

you will need pancake bumb stops, jsut cut the stock ones out and place the new ones in on the hole thats jsut past the stock stop.

The dash stays, but the seats, console, rear seats, seat belts, and radio are out. The AC system and ducting will be coming out. the rearend, fuel tank, and anything that isn't useful for the swap will be posted in the for sale section. its all in perfect shape. The motor has 19021 miles on it, and it won't be getting anymore.

This is out of my f-250, not the Ranger motor.

Not too shabby for a little 6.0 with a mild tune. First run was a 697 at 1300+ but unfortunately it was a spike, so I asked it be deleted. Then on the second run it did the "I didn't like what you just did to me so I am going to shut your fuel off" thing that some of the 6.0's do. After a reset, we ran a fuel only Innovative file that Eric had written for me just after I put the turbo and injectors in. The last run was with a shot of Nitrous to about the 85 mark when my damned fuses blew AGAIN on the NOS system. Not sure why it works till I get to an event, but I am fairly pleased with the numbers none the less.

Yeah the damned EGR valves and cooler is what made the 6.0 unreliable. My EGR is turned off in my tuning, the EGR valve is welded closed and I cut out the y pipe where the exhaust would connect to the cooler so that no exhaust goes through the cooler at all. The Ranger will not have an EGR system at all.

LOL. Yeah slow progress. The Moser axle shafts took 3 weeks to get in, so I will pick up the rear differential, completed, Wed. Night, and I will have a rolling Chassis Thursday night. The tranny and both turbos are on their way and will be in California by Friday. My engine builders father was just sent home from the hospital because there is no more they can do, so he is going to take care of that. Not exactly possible with a diesel though. Well for the most part. Too lean means a drop in power on a diesel. They have no butterfly, they suck in as much air as they can all the time. it will burn all the fuel you can give it. You can make it too rich, it will still run just fine, just smoke like a sum biatch!

Are good aftermarket parts available for them?

looking great.

Just a heads up, but if that is the fuel cell mount, NHRA regs say the bottom of the cell has to be completely protected. (i.e. completely boxed in except for fuel line connections. Even if it is an aluminum cell.

I don't know it you will ever have to pass NHRA tech, but it would be nice to not have that spring up as an issue in the future.

dalpilot
Jun 15 2008, 02:32pm
Thanks, I'll look into that. To run pro-street in the places I run, I don't think I need to have it, but I will change it up to get it up to NHRA standards to avoid getting the boot at the track.

Yeah, the 6.0 has 18:1 compression from the factory. It takes some pressure to hold the heads down.

quadzjr
Aug 22 2008, 10:09am
what do you use for gaskets? machined surface with Orings? MLS?

dalpilot
Aug 22 2008, 02:20pm
SO far the best gaskets are the factory. They are a 5 layer metal. Rings seem to be worse at holding it together. I am running reduced compression from reducing the rod length and reducing the compression height on the pistons. Should drop the CR
down to about 15-16. This will also allow for more boost without lifting the heads. The block and heads have also been machined to make them FLAT!

tmsoko
Aug 30 2008, 06:57pm
Do you have to worry about quench height in a Diesel? I know the way you are lowering compression would be a no-no in a Windsor gas engine!

dalpilot
Aug 31 2008, 07:06am
No you have to remember that the diesel is a compression ignition engine. Compression ratio's will still be in the 15 - 16 area. With that type of compression, and the amount of fuel we will be cramming into it, flame propagation rates are extremely fast anyway. Throw in a bunch of nitrous, and........ There are guys that are in the 12-13 CR range on the big dodge motors that start them with ether. They don't like running cold, but they will run like hell once they warm up.

Is the motor centered in the chassis in those pics?

I had to offset mine to the passenger side to make everything work better. I was afraid the steering shaft was going to be a prob with yours after reading about gregr and the 4.6L swap and a BBf on a 98 swap I saw. Both of those guys had to move the shaft for clearance.

Its offset about 3/4". Guess I need to look at what those guys did.

Steering is nothing a few u-joint can't take care of. Looks like one of those joints may be inside the truck though!

Exhaust is going to be the biggest issue - espicially driver's side. Even with clearing out most of the sock stuff, you still have those upper a-arm mounts. When Ford did the lighning bolt ranger, they moved the mounts to the side of the frame and made custom upper (shorter) arms, but that blows geometry. My custom headers for my 351W were a mess to make, but I kept almost all stock lines, column, stayed inside the frame, etc.. You can dump inside the wheel wells as I am sure you aren't stuffing them with 305/50R20 tires up front!

I guess I didn't realize you hadn't gotten into the engine fitting much yet. This is the real fun part!

dalpilot
Sep 09 2008, 08:32pm
Its in there now, and the upper a arms are within 3/4 of an inch to the exhaust manifolds. Its tight, but it fits. The steering is the problem now, but we'll figure that out pretty quick. Dry sump would drop it down, but then there is the a-arm problem. The turbos go on the pax side anyway, and the hood is gonna be custom. Its all part of the fun. LOL

Here is an idea of what its gonna sound like. This is my f-250 today after straight piping it.

This is the first start of the day. The oil isn't even warm yet, but it whistles already. Once it warms up its much more pronounced.

You can hear the miss from the bad injector caused by my fuel pump dieing on the way to Steele AL race
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7fAgfv7kjc
And from about 15 feet away:

dalpilot

that 250 sounds so sexy man.. the whistle gets real annoying i bet on the highway and you got some black stuff around the exhaust pipes on the body

Yeah that black stuff is soot, and it washes right off, but comes right back about 3 miles after. LOL Thats the price of nearly 600 HP though, so I'll take it. :E:thumbsup:

The whistle goes away pretty quick after you get in the pedal, and turns into a big block sound. Like this:

No propane is kind of old school not many folks using it anymore. The 7.3's used it alot because they could not get enough fuel with their small injectors, and weak High pressure oil pump. Its a fuel, so it gets hot. The 6.0 likes nitrous......alot! Just a dry kit, spraying nitrous only. Its only adding 02, so it cools it increases boost, and burns the excess fuel. When a diesel is spraying NOS, there is no smoke.

Actually Yes, the truck is leaving California, and gonna make a brife stop at SEMA in Vegas, then heading to Dallas on the 7th or 8th. I should get it that next weekend and get to start to finish it here. Been a little slow, with work, and I had surgery that kept me from doing anything but eating and getting fat on Sept. 11. Hey Guys, this thread is getting a little long. I'm going to prune some comments, and non-related talk, this is too good of a thread to be cluttered as it is...

Edit - 255 posts. Left any questions that were relevant to the build, but 12 pages was a bit much. Should be a build easier to follow now. Most of what got deleted was parts requests for the old truck, and some redundant requests from the new one, as well as some flying questions, and random smilies inserted into the thread, for no real reason. Hope no one gets too pissed off at the clean-up, but now the info supplied by the original poster is closer, and flows much better....

Had to add almost 130 grams at the point where the slug is. The front was 130 grams off and the rear 126 from the factory. it is now .2 off in the front and less than .1 in the rear.

Yeah, I had a friend help me weld that bar, and he forgot to put up the shield before he started to weld. Its worse than Dirt. I'll figure something out. Maybe when I have them make carpet for it, I can do something different.

Spent a bunch of time cleaning the truck today. 8 straight days working on it, I figured I was due a break. So I thought I would finally sticker it up and say thanks to the sponsors. The stickers do not cover all of them, but a few go in different places, (Grand Rock, and Fass on the back window((That isn't there yet))), and I am waiting on a few new ones for Lowry Custom Motorsports, TS performance, DI Pricol (a very large sticker), and Greg Houge Motorsports supply. Turbo and fuel system sponsors have asked me to hold off announcing for now, and I am betting Comp D is gonna be a little larger when its all done. LOL

out of curiosity, how are you gonna get the rear window in with the cage there? I realize it's lexan and will have cutouts for the bars, but will the cutouts go all the way to the roof or what?

Cutouts will go to the bottom of the window, but using a very thin blade on a jigsaw, you can actually glue the pieces you cutout back in, and use a grommet to seal the hole. It works out nice and clean.

It would be fun to bring your Ranger to Hartsfield, and blast it down the runway one time, before the police came.
You would be the talk of TechOps for many, many years.lol

No thanks, I blast down the runway at ATL nearly every day. Sometimes several times a day.

At one point I think you mentioned this truck being street legal. Is this still the case?

I should be getting it this week. Only thing I am waiting on are valve springs. The problem is at 55ish pounds of boost, it blows the intake valves open, which is bad, LOL. The guy who was making the springs is behind and saying they won't be ready till Mayish. Thats not gonna work, so I either find some shims.....which I am working on now, or keep the boost lower till I get the springs for it. Also I got my 50 mm waste gate yesterday, for nearly 450.00 :bawl:, but its a really nice one though:tongue

and the turbo exhaust plumbing is being put together now, by someone waaaaay smarter and better than me. :hail: Once thats done, then I can drop it in the truck all together. Its far easier to put it in all together than to add stuff to it inside the truck. This week, I will have the back window in, and all the windows tinted.......DARK! Then I will have the electrical hooked up from the batteries to the engine compartment, and the padding on the roll cage. I leave on the 1st for FFDO training, (Federal Flight Deck officer) for a week, then work a 4 day trip, so basically until valentines day its not gonna get any love. It all takes a bunch of time, but it's coming together fast. Once the motor is in, plumbing the turbo's "boost side" , putting in the radiator, hoses and fans, and getting a drive shaft made are the big things left to do. Lots of smaller stuff, like getting the exhaust hooked up, and running the nitrous and water injection, and hooking up gauges. The drive shaft shouldn't take more than a few days to get made.

Here is a little something I found today to "Motivate" me.
