Your owners manual will probably tell you it never needs replaced, but I change them at no later than 50,000 miles. I figure there are bits of worn synchronizers and other stuff in there, and it's a cheap item to change. They use Mercron transmission fluid. You should also change the rear differential fluid at 36-50,000 miles.

I disagree on at least my tranny. The piece of SH*T that my 1998 came with will probrably die B4 the engine. It definetely has issues. This thing totally hates the 2-3 shift, and this combination slave cylinder thow-out bearing really sucks in my opinion. I would bet on an ol T5 lasting forever, but the newer trannies leave much to be desired.

Sonny, I'm not sure what you're disagreeing on. Nobody said anything about the trans being a limited life item.

Also, did you notice this thread was over 2 weeks old? We advise against digging up old posts unless something really relevant can be said, as the original intent of the post has probably been resolved. Just a friendly piece of advice. :)
