It may. Depends.

The 4.0 needs the Mazda M5OD-R1. The 2.9's used them, and the Mitsu FM146 or FM132. They won't last behind a 4.0.

2WD or 4WD...

It's a 2wd. Will the M5OD-R1 from a 2.9 hold up behind a 4.0?

It should. Will depend on how you drive it. You'd obviously be best of getting the HD version.

Thanks for the info dlibson,This will be going in my daily driver so I won't be abusing it, but I'll just keep looking for one out of a 88-98 4.0 truck.

I found a 98 explorer with a 4.0 5 speed, will all the parts from this vehicle work with my ranger?

It should. The hydraulics will be different I think...

You may need to get the ranger stuff, or modify it. But the trans should bolt up.

Thanks again! Finding a manual trans from a 4.0 vehicle is like trying to find hens teeth.

I found a 91 explorer sport with a 4.0 manual trans but it's a 4wd, can I put a 2wd tail shaft on that trans and use it in my truck? Will I be able to use the pedal assembly from the 91 or the 98? What would wok best the 91 or the 98? I plan on putting in a new slave cylinder, clutch master, flywheel, and clutch set.
