View Full Version : How many miles on your clutch?
todds01ranger Nov 01 2008, 10:23pm I wanted to know how many miles you guys have on your manual transmission clutches. I have a '01 Model with 108,000 on my stock clutch. Also, what is the life expectancy on the clutch if it is well taken care of (not dumped Often, etc.) Thanks!
grumpy Nov 01 2008, 11:47pm I have 210 xxx km'h on mine
HahnsB2 Nov 01 2008, 11:51pm Unknown on mine. My fathers 2.3 ranger has over 250K on it total, he's driven it for the last 80K of that and hasn't had to touch the clutch, and I even drove it for 8 months when I first started driving, I wasn't nice to it :driving: If you know how to drive a clutch and you aren't off-roading, it should last every bit of 150k or more.
rubydist Nov 02 2008, 08:08pm I had my factory clutch changed at ~95k miles. The clutch disk was less than 50% worn, but the tob was noisy, and the fingers were worn. (Too much time at stoplights with my toe on the clutch pedal, I think.) If well cared for, you can get 200k or more out of one. Obviously, you can also get much less...
Ryan KDX Nov 02 2008, 08:20pm Its usually some $20 part that makes you drop the trans. Like the pilot bearing, as mine went out around 95,000 miles. I would have been fine just reinstalling the clutch, but I figured since the trans was out... for $200, I shouldnt have to worry about a new one for a long time. Your clutch will probably outlive the cylinders and the bearings.
96xlt.RanGer Nov 03 2008, 11:28pm My clutch had 200000 on it and that's dumping it alot
streetkid Nov 07 2008, 04:44pm I'm at ~115k miles on my 00, clutch still grabs fine, but I have to let the clutch out pretty far before it grabs.. getting any kind of launch out of a light is pretty hard.
How much would a clutch job cost? I found a shop here that will charge 450 for labor out the door and I can bring my own parts. Seen clutch kits for ~250-300. So ~750, is that fair?
edit I see kits on ebay for <200
dlibson Nov 07 2008, 09:00pm Depends on what you got. For a 4wd that's fair. Border line fair though. If it's a 2wd that's high.
The shop just checked mine with the trans out (long story involving coolant lines and burnt flesh). Said it looked great for 103k miles. I expect to get well over 175k (finger crossed).
My dad's '89 has over 260k, on the same clutch. Amazing really.
davefout Jan 14 2009, 12:58am Well I just changed mine out this past weekend I had 143k on it....the clutch slave and all other components looked great.......my pilot bearing took a major crap though
I had been having issues and was really thinking it was my slave so i took on the task but when I got the trans dropped and really tore into the thing I ended up vacuuming out the dust that was once a set of needle bearings
I wish i could have got a pic of the clutch it honestly prlly could have gone another 60k but if anyone has dropped the trans and gone through the headache of dealing with the tight clearances in there they'll agree that you might as well replace the whole thing and not worry about it for another 150K.....lol....so that's my story .....a 10 dollar bearing was the pit fall of my clutch system....oh by the way I got a clutch kit from Ford including everything (even the slave) for $257.00 so at that price you really don't have an excuse not to replace it all when it's dropped
PickupMan92 Jan 14 2009, 11:29am my slave was going around 50K so I just swapped out the clutch as well... I have put 50K on it thus far with no problems and having a 4 banger, there's really no need to dump the clutch... you aren't going to go fast anyways lol.
on my old 98 i had bout 145 on it and stock clutch. on my 04 i have 85k and stock clutch, but i have been to the track a lot with the 04, im not seein this clutch lasting too much longer.
Teddyzee Jan 14 2009, 12:05pm I've got 2200000Km on mine. It doesn't like to go into gear when stopped. Could be the slave, needs bleeding, or a trans issue. Certainly still grips well.
It's coming out, though.
timmah1 Jan 14 2009, 12:06pm on my 94 it went out at 78,000 and i replaced the slave cylinder.
on my 95 looking at 117,000 and still good to go
Wheat Jan 14 2009, 12:14pm 111K on my clutch, but i had to replace the TOB at 80K.
bisjoe Jan 14 2009, 01:22pm That depends on the driver and also how often you drive up hill in traffic.
We had an '87 Aerostar 5 speed and the clutch lasted 130k miles.
Fordranger1998 Jan 14 2009, 01:30pm my dads truck has 180,000 miles on the clutch but its about done for and its 4wd
My 98 had 140,000 and i just decided to replace it when i put my new motor in but clutch wasn't all that bad looking
bertmc1 Jan 16 2009, 09:21pm My old 1993 had 230,000 miles on it when I changed the clutch because of the pilot bearing. The old clutch looked good and would have gone for 50,000 or 60,000 more miles.
GTwannabe Jan 17 2009, 12:39am 132k miles, no problems yet.
stng_96 Jan 19 2009, 03:14pm 272k on my dads 93, 108k on my 96, both work just fine
my truck's clutch has got 89k on it, still works great, idk if its ever been replaced though.
Flying Horseradish Jan 19 2009, 06:04pm uhh my truck has around 198k on it and i just replaced it about 17k miles ago this is the second one
Ford Fanatic Jan 20 2009, 02:48pm I had 208K on my 98 when I sold it. It still never slipped.
odds1591 Jan 20 2009, 06:08pm i have a 98 and i have 143000 on mine and it slips every once and a while but good most of the time
