Manual transmission - removal and installation
Step 3
"From inside the vehicle, disconnect the barbed end of the clutch/starter interlock switch rod from the clutch pedal. Remove the lockpin and remove the master cylinder pushrod from the clutch pedal. Remove the plastic bushing."
I see no such thing inside of my truck. Just a big plastic cylinder around a rod with a plug in it that goes to the clutch pedal. Maybe this is only for '84-'88 models?
Sprag-O Dec 20 2008, 10:11am If you have the 2wd M5OD transmission...
Disconnect ground from battery.
unscrew shifter boot 4x phillips... take the the transmission cover plate off, like 4x 10mm's
loosen the shifter clamp 15mm? and pull off stick...
Get under truck.
Drain transmission first, or you'll have a mess on your hands.
drop rear driveshaft.4 bolts and slides out.
pull the hydraulic hose with special tool or flat head screw driver. (You push the white surround in, then pull hose out)
Pull speed sensor connector, and backup swith.
pull the starter motor. 3 1/2" bolts I think, then pull the cables to the starter and get that outta there.
pull the 8 bellhousing bolts. Believe they're in the 1/2" range too. top ones are always a blast :)
Put a jackstand under the transmission
Unbolt the transmission mount on the x-member
pull the 2 bolts that hold the x-member in (if you're lucky they wont be frozen in the bushings)
drop out the x-member, now you can use a jack, or just bench press (transmissions pretty light) keep transmission parallel with truck and pull straight back. should slight right out.
You've successfully dropped the transmission... reverse steps to re-install
DudeZX Dec 20 2008, 04:05pm Mmk, thanks man, i've got all of those done except for draining it. I just put a bag over the rear where the driveshaft comes out like haynes suggested.
Also, i'm only finding 6 bolts for the trans. That is including the top ones. I got those out no problem with a few extensions and a u-joint.
Sprag-O Dec 20 2008, 05:18pm Pretty sure there are 8... 2 top, 2 bottom, 2 bottom middle, and 2 upper middle facing the front of the truck.
DudeZX Dec 20 2008, 06:55pm mmk yeah you are right. I found those when I went out again. Those seem like a real PITA to get out. There is some line in front of the one on the drivers side preventing me from getting a socket wrench on it, the one on the other side, I can barely see.
BlueMan Dec 20 2008, 07:26pm Loooooong extensions with a wobble socket work best for those hard to get at bolts.
DudeZX Dec 20 2008, 07:45pm Yeah, I was thinking a wobble extension may work.
Sprag-O Dec 21 2008, 12:48pm G'luck man... You do this enough... you may start remember crazy things... Like the size of bolts, etc, you have to pull. :)
bigalpha Dec 22 2008, 10:11am When you pull the hydraulic hose, does it seal itself or does it leak everywhere?
I assume that when you go to reinstall tranny, the hydraulic system will need to be burped?
Sprag-O Dec 22 2008, 11:08am It's a quick disconnect... much like an airhose.
Should still bleed the system when you put it back together
DudeZX Dec 23 2008, 12:32am Mmk, I got it out fine after I got the right tools in my hands. Thanks for the help. The line/hose ended up being the dipstick tube O_o. Seriously, wtf? I did end up just having to use a wrench on that one, and there was just enough room to get the bolt out, much less get a socket wrench on it.
Clean up those bolts on the wire wheel, and use anti-seize on them, it'll be that much easier when you have to drop it again...don't ask me how I know.
