View Full Version : Chattering after new clutch install?

I did everything by the book, torqued everything to specs, cleaned, yada yada yada, and I'm getting a chatter from the truck with the clutch enganged/disengaged in neutral, seems to stop when I go in gear, but i'm not sure. It's not quite the sound I was hearing when my clutch was going out, but it is close. I do not understand what it could be, unless it is the pressure plate and maybe it will go away after the clutch gets broken in.
I replaced the flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate, pilot bearing, slave cylinder and release bearing, as I said, by the book.
The clutch works great though, grabs good, gear changes are good, ect...
Is it just the pressure plate/flywheel/clutch disk/everything needing to be broken in? It's kind of concerning me, I'd hate to have to take it all apart again.

There should not be a chattering noise when you are just sitting there in neutral. Does this noise change if you rev the engine?

Many times, a new clutch will chatter a little on engagement until things get worn in a little, but it should not make noise.

it chatters a little when you rev it up, you can hear it chatter as the RPM's go down, and then it seems to go away. It's gotten better since last night, but it is still there.
Maybe I will just drive it a bit more and see how it plays out.

I'm willing to bet a few more heat cycles, and your pressure plate will be seated correctly, and fully "massaged." It doesn't take much.. If it does chatter while you sit there, then your pressure plate is most likely junk, or you hydraulics could be awry IIRC.

Feelin pretty dumb right now.
It was never my pressure plate, it's my exhaust. I got curious and just put my foot on the tailpipe and it stopped. Its also developed an exhaust leak.
Gotta get under it and check it out soon, then fix it.
It never ends with this truck lol.

It was amazing how quiet it got when I tore off the loose and rusty 15 year old heat shields on the exhaust.
Goodluck,

I'd say be thankful that you weren't tearing the tranny off again, but some people enjoy that sort of thing..

Did you have to remove the rear pipe to get the tranny off?? I bet it's at one of those 2 front flanges..

This is true lol...

Nah, my truck is a 2.3, the most I touched of the exhaust was a hanger that bolts up to the rear of the trans.

The leak is driving me crazy, i'm pretty sure it's somewhere after/at the muffler. I've got to get under it and check it out soon.

Okay, I understand.. I've never seen the under carriage of an older Ranger, so I wasn't sure of it's configuration..

I've got a small exhaust leak at the driver's side flange on the manifold-to-front pipe.. It sucks, but it's still cold and crappy where I live, so it can wait until April..
