View Full Version : 97 5.0 Ranger slow build

Well as the title says, this will be a slow build, however I already have alot of parts I need for the build,I have been the builder and owner of a 86 5.0,T-5 ranger(truely missed). The reason this build will be slow is because of a nagging wife:blahblah:LOL.She says I have too many toy's,but I don't think so

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa281/FrankZX/Picture549.jpg
And a couple more. Here is the truck that will be made over
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa281/FrankZX/Picture024.
jpg

Also the $50.00 5.0 I scored off Mustang parts speciality in Georgia.http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa281/FrankZX/Picture022-1.jpgThe engine was a good shortblock, but was left in the rain for a couple days. There is alittle rust in the cylinders, but it knocks right off with a swipe or 2 from a piece of red Scotch brite.I'm going to tare it down, and atleast check bearing clearance, and hone and new rings.BTW,it a roller motor from a 90 5.0 Mustang.I had a F cam in my 93GT,and really liked it,so I'll probably use that.On my last Ranger I used a 1/4"plate and 4.0 mounts. The engine really moved around in the engine bay. This time,I'll try 'vert mounts. The engine will be carbbed because this will be a super budget build.Probably a Weiand Stelth intake and 650DP.I used the cheap Headman Ranger engine swap headers on my last Ranger, this time I hope to use Hooker headers.Probably the most expensive part. Here is the same trans from my other 5.0 Ranger
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa281/FrankZX/Picture024.jpg(new owner put a C4 trans),and I bouget my T5 back from him. It's bellhousing is already drilled for a Total Performance T5 conversion kit. This time I will use a 240Z slave cylinder.I'm selling off some Stang parts to hopely fund this project(hope they sell fast).I aslo have a set of E7TE 5.0 heads that I'll mildly prot for the project.Let me know what you think.http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa281/FrankZX/Picture024.jpg

Yes,I'm in Loganville Ga.Mustang Parts Specialty is in Winder. They are probably the largest Mustang and Ford only salvage yard in Georgia. They also have some complete 5.0 FI engines on Ebay as we speak.Ya'll might want to check it out.

I hope to be making alittle progress.I started porting a set of E7 heads,I won a 5.0 Explorer intake from Eaby, and I'll do some mild porting on it too.I also found a 5.0 wiring harness and computer in my shop(I must be a pack rat).I'll post pic's soon.

No good pic's,but here is a pic of the exhaust ports.I have ground all 8 thermactor humps flush with the roof of the port.http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa281/FrankZX/Picture050.jpg
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa281/FrankZX/Picture049.jpg
I bought a set of James Duff headers off Ebay today, and I should get my rering kit for the short block. The last 5.0 I build had 275 rwhp with a cheap intake,F cam,and home ported heads.I hope to make 300hp this go around, but I think a good cam choice could make it or not.Anyone have a suggestion for a cam?I'll be using the Explorer intake port matched,19lb injectors, and a 65mm throttle body.
Sorry for the bad pic's.I'll get better ones soon.

I went shopping today.It felt like Christmas all over again.I came home with a gasket kit,bearings,rings,rod bolts,timing chain,oil pump,header bolts,and a valve spring kit.http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa281/FrankZX/Picture055.jpg
And headers awaited me when I got home.

The TrickFlow valve spring kit came with locks, retainers, shimsand stem seals. They are good for .542 lift cam.http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa281/FrankZX/Picture052.jpg
More blocking cleaning.I got about 4 more hours of cleaning left.

Can anyone tell me where I can get some good information on wiring my 5.0 to my Ranger?I have wiring diagrams for both the Mustang that the harness came from, and the diagram on my 97 Ranger, but I think I need to know what pins to push out and what wires to go back into the connectors.
For some reason,I can't get into the "swap section" on this site.

Here are a few shots of the upper intake.I bead blasted it ,then I had it chemical dipped to remove all the crap on the inside, then I painted it with PJ1 Kawasaki epoxy frame paint. It don't quite match the valve covers, but it did flow good, except the 2 runs.Thankfully you can't hardly see them.
Tomorrow I'm going to a junkyard to find anything I might need.I hope to find a set of fat swaybars.

I tore the heads back off to replace them with a set of GT40P's.I hope they flow as good or better than my ported E7's.I'm getting pretty close to putting it in my truck.I hope to sell the stock 2.3 and 5 speed, also the ported E7's.Then I'll defently have the funds to finish it.
One last thing,I'm debateing 2.5" dual exhaust,or 2 into 1 Magnaflow 3" exiting in the stock location?

I've got a set of ported E7s that I took maybe an hour to do and from what I hear on some Mustang forums, that they really outflow the GT40Ps and you don't have to worry about the whack exhaust port arrangement either. It's just hearsay but my engine is very similar to yours so we shall see. One last thing, I think you would be better off using 24# injectors than the 19s.

I doubt the E7's out flow the GT40P's,but a good home port job could very well flow as well as the GT's.
Thanks for the heads up.I plan to go J/Y diving again soon to get a set of 24lb.injectors from a Lincoln,or Explorer.I just got to do some research to find what all came with 24 lb.injectors.

Let us know how those bars work out, Ill probably need to do something like that.

The bars work great. No wheel hop at all.I only have about $90.00 in the whole set up.I did use cheap heim joints, but if they go bad,I can just install better quality ones.
I have some cheap radials that are hard as a rock,no chance of hooking up even with the 4 banger.
With a quality drag radial, and about 2 degree pinion drop,I think the truck will hook up pretty good.
Another good idea is to use a tractor link that goes between the 3 point hitch and say a bush hog.You just cut it in half, weld a piece od pipe to make it longer, and you have a adjustable link. This may not make sence, but go to turborangerforums, and searce for a guy named Jess,He made some.

I haven't been around in awhile, but here is the latest update:I have decited to use a MegaSquirt I ECU,and Stimulator kit to do away with the factory harness and computer. You can get the MS in a DIY kit from diyautotune.com or a assemblies unit.I chose the diy kit.http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa281/FrankZX/Picture112.jpg

Man, this is a budget build?

Doing impressive work! Keep it up!!!

I would have to buy a A9L computer, and them have it tuned for my set up.I was looking at $300.00 plus.I got the whole MegaSquirt kit for $347.00,and if I ever decide to go turbo or supercharge, all I have to do is retune. This is my first time doing anything like this,so I'm learning as I go.I hope to get my truck going in the next 2 months if all goes well.
Thanks for the kind words.

Did you shim anything, or just move it in the holes/slots?

Frank ZX
Apr 20 2009, 01:42pm
Did you shim anything, or just move it in the holes/slots?

I didn't shim anything.I just sat the engine in place,as far back as possible, marked the studs on the motor mounts, drilled the holes and then drilled another hole down about another 1 1/2".Then used a sawzall to make the holes a slot.
As you know,I had to use the Ranger transmission mount.I cut the slots longer on the crossmember.
All I have do do is make sure the engine is level, and tighten all the bolts and nuts.
I hope the cab clears the engine.lol But I will cross that bridge when I get there.
I wanted the engine back as far as possible for traction.I was thinking about moving the cab back about 3",but it would be too much trouble.

Looking good! You don't have to get too crazy with keeping the engine level since 99.9 of the streets you drive on have a crown, so it won't be level even if it is level. lol

I struck gold today.I went to my local Pull-A-Part and found a 8.8 rear under a 4.0 Ranger.I yanked it out, almost passed out from dragging it 300 yards in 80 degree heat.lol
It has a 3:08 gear, and when I turn the pinion gear, both axles turn the same direction.Does this mean I have limited slip????
I have a 3:73 gear set and differental from a 93 Mustang GT that I may swap gears. Also got the exhaust mocked up.Pic's soon.
BTW,It you guys have a Pull-A-Part,a rear differental W/O drums is $68.00.

Mine's coming along nicely. Finally gave in and ordered a braided clutch hose and fittings... I had the necessary Ford parts, but they were a little messed up... After a series of trials, I ended up with all new accessory brackets and alternator. It should be running this weekend, but i won't have the clutch and accessories for a couple weeks. Close!

My advice to others- Don't buy a donor car, unless is a 5spd Mustang!

Oh, and after seeing your pics, I've begun some major grinding/cleaning/painting- your frame looks awesome.

Cool build. How many pounds was the sound deadner?

I weighed just the passenger side floorboard and it weighed 8 lbs.I would guess all the sound deadner would weigh about 20 lbs.
My last ranger weighed 2795 with 1/4 tank of fuel.I hope to get this one to about 2700.
BTW,I heard the 1983 Rangers came with aluminum front bumpers, just FYI.

My buddy has a old junk 4x4 Ranger thats beat up and it has a aluminum front bumper. Im not sure what year it is but its the only one I have ever seen. I was wondering where to find another one. Ill have to keep a look out at the junkyards for one.

I thought regular cab 2wd trucks were more around 3200. But the newer ones are a bit bigger I think.

My 86 was a base model ranger with a 2.3 and 5 speed.I took all the A/c stuff out,and that's it.I weighed it on a certified scale a Silver Dollar dragway.2790.I asked the tech guy if the scale was accurate, and his answer was yes.

I have not weighed this truck yet.My goal is 2700.I was saying my last Ranger was 2795 with a carbed 5.0 and 5 speed and the sound deadner still in the floor boards.
Now this current truck had about 40 lbs of dirt and crud removed from the frame and cab.lol
I'm curious of what some of your Rangers weigh?

Last I weighed mine it was in the 4300 lb range. That was with the 4.0.
I'd imagine its nearer 4400 now with the 5.0 and an AOD.
I can't vouch for the accuracy of the weigh scales thou - local garbage transfer station.

Holly crap!!My friends Full size Dodge Ram weights 5300#,and it's a 4 door long wheel base.I would guess your 4X4 is alittle lighter?A AOD is pretty heavy compaired to a T-5.

my 87 weighed in at 2750ish (cant vouch for accuracy of scale), 302 aluminum heads and intake but a big old c6 trans.

gonna try shave some more off the front by building my own core support and ditching the upper steel inner fender. i'll probably use 1x1 box tubing to accomplish this.

i had no idea some rangers came with aluminum bumpers gonna have to go search some junkyards on the weekend.

Couple questions about the ditributor- Does the top of it sit higher than the top of the carb? (do you have a carb spacer on there?) My bro is looking at one of those, and has a large oval Cobra air filter, Edelbrock Performer and Holley 600, wondering if the dist is too tall for his setup.

280ZX.This is the kit you can buy from Total Performance, but it is too easy to make.My personal openion is this is the best slave cylinder to use.
I don't have a carb spacer, but that is a Edelbrock VicJr,so it is pretty tall.It should not hit the carb or air cleaner. The only clearence issue is there is not much clearence for the heater hose on the intake.
I had the same distributor on a mustang a few years back, and it worked good. The HEI is not my first choice, but at $44.00 on Ebay,I couldn't pass it up.

In case anyone does'nt know what FMF is,It's motorcycle exhaust systems. The decal fit over the Ford blue oval on the grill almost perfect.FMF stands for "flying machine factory"or "fast muter f*#$@%".
The carpet is straight from a Boeing 777.Scraps left over from the last plane I installed carpet on.I had the carpet on my toolbox at work for the last 6 months,so I decited to bring it home and put it in the Ranger for the time being. It almost matches the seat.Maybe Ford gets their better ideas from Boeing.lol

Nice to see it in one piece-ish.

One day at a time.I hope to get it painted by September.
I think I'm going to put a stock hood on it,insted of the cobra jet scooped hood.I like the sleeper look.
I was messing around with a friend on my way to work the other morning. He was beside of me,and I let it rip in first gear, shifted into second, and needless to say,the back end passed the front end.Scared the crap out of me.So he gave me some 275/50R15 to replace the rock hard 245/45R17 that were on the truck.
I would really like to weigh it,I don't think it weighs over 2700#.The engine is basicly stock with no more than 300HP max,BUT it is deffiently the fastest vehicle I have ever owned. If I can figure out how to post a video,I will.
Oh yea,The trans syncros are gone.Grinds going into 3 and 4th gear.I have to rebuild the trans before I take it to the track.I hope to get that done by Oct.

The trans let loose.3rd and 4 gear was grinding, and now it will not go into 1st gear.I think I found a guy that has a good T5 and a set of worked GT40 heads. If I do score them, the engine is going back under the knife. It has plenty of power, but too much is just enough.

I have alot of little body work to do before paint, but I plan on priming it one color as soon as the weather warms up.I have to get a drop base air filter housing so I can use a stock hood. The Victor Jr intake is too tall without it.
I swapped the Weld wheels for a set of chrome FR500's.17X9 front and
17X10.5 rear.It drives alot better too.I would like to find a set of late model 15" steel ranger wheels just for daily driving, and I also like the sleeper look. The exhaust is too loud too.Who makes a good flowing quite muffler?
New pic's soon.
BTW,I nevered mentioned my broken transmission. The syncro were shot, and 2nd gear had some bad teeth so I looked on Ebay and found a T5 rebuild kit from The Gear Box.I got the kit a week later and rebuilt my trans in one weekend. It's working great.I just hope it last awhile.lol

The Ranger is back under the knife.I traded my Vic Jr intake and Holley carb for a Edelbrock Performer fuel injection intake,24lb.injectors,BBK throttle body, wiring harness from a mass air Mustang,A9L computer, and all sensors.I'm getting everything except the fuel pump.I also bought a set of 3:73 gears.I'm hoping to get a fuel cell mounted towards the rear to help balance the truck out somewhat.I think I will like the fuel injection much better, because with the big Holley,it very cold natured in 25 degree weather, and it uses more gas than I expected.
