i have a lifted 90 ranger 2wd with a 2.3 and manual trans. i stumbled across a 89 in the junkyard that was 2.3 4x4 manual trans. picked up the trans for 80 bux. i just did a brand new clutch in my truck a few 100 miles ago and was wondering if the clutch is the same for 2wd and 4x4 trans. is there anything ill need to do im forgetting? just swap it in with the 4x4 rear drive shaft and should be good to go? also wondering if i run the 1350 manual tcase can i run it with out a front driveshaft in place for a while, or with it being a slip yolk will all my fluid be flying out. i planned on getting the trans and tcase in and still be driveable before i get around to doin the solid front axle.
please help
thank you

Clutch is the same, yes you can drive a 1350 without the front shaft.

No problem, good luck! That's a good deal on that tranny BTW, my dad's screwed if his 2.3 4x4 tranny bites the dust, they're rare as hell.

HahnsB2, are the driveshaft lengths the same on the 2wd and 4wd? I thought I had read that they were a couple of inches different, but I don't know for sure....

I'm not sure on the actual lengths but the 2wd used a slip yoke, the 4wd uses a flange yoke. I'd imaging the t-case adds more length than the 2wd tail housing.

i have an 03 edge 2wd, can i got to like a pick a part and get the components to go 4wd? will there just bolt up or is there alot of customizing involved? any one know?

fzr confused

you can do anything if you get enough parts/time/money lol. it is not just bolt on 4wd, but if you get all the parts its swappable for sure. you will need everything from the front axle, front and rear driveshafts, trans, t-case, spindles and all the brackets....and also probably a lot of other small parts.

With an '03, you'd be better off selling the truck and buying a 4wd Ranger, or finding a rolled salvage vehicle and putting your cab & box on it.

ok, thanks, i guess ill just get a locker and keep it mild, one more thing tho, will the tow hooks on the front of the 4x4 fit on the 4x2 edge? it looks like they would work but i just want to make sure

your edge should have come with tow hooks...or at least mine did...unless you are talking about the chrome FX4 ones??? also, a locker in the edge will let you do some decent mudding, i know mine went through a lot more than anyone would think.

Aren't edged pretty simple to convert to 4x4 since they're already set up with torsion bars?

fzr confused

a lot of people have converted, and it is easier than others but it still costs a bit worth of parts. and not like you can really trade your parts with the guy that has a 4wd and wants to lower it since both have t-bars, you get the same drop out of both....

might be worth it to check out salvage yards and see what kind of deals you can get on parts
