View Full Version : Idiots posting stupid replies to tech questions
mxracer652 Feb 17 2009, 09:26am Am I the only one who sees the know nothings posting replies to tech questions that are utterly useless?
Example: "xxxx year x.0 liter man trans hanging at 3krpm between shifts, all gears, all speeds. New plugs, wires, cleaned maf & iac, no codes"
Reply is: "yo dood, maby ur air filtur iz clogd"
It's post whoring, the person doesn't have any experience on the subject & they're only drowning out the good tech from those who are knowledgeable.
Can some sort of rating system be implemented? It keeps the ding-dongs away from doing damage.
GearHeadJLM Feb 17 2009, 09:55am Man, I told you once already not to belittle people's comments. The "stupid comments" you are referring to are often legitimate suggestions. But I'll leave it up to the mods on how to address your IMHO over confident and poor attitude.

But it would be hard for a newer member to descern that.
I pretty much know exactly the attitude to expect from each member.
I guess that's why sometimes it's good to hear affirmations from multiple members sometimes.
"yes, I did it, and it worked"
"worked for me, too, but my tire rubbed"
"mine didn't rub, but I have a smaller wheel"
"worked for me, too. No issues at all"
Hopefully each member realizes that there will be fodder on an open forum.

i think this is a poor way to "rate" some one's knowledge about a particular topic or there knowledge in general. just because they have 2,000 posts and happened to join 4 years ago doesnt by any means make them an expert on any subject. although there may have been a better, less arrogent way to bring it up than the way mxracer652 brought it up, i do agree in a way that "rep" points or however they do it other forums could be helpful sometimes. but on the other hand, degrading other members that you feel are "idiots" because they offer a suggestion that you may not agree with when they may very well believe they are being helpful is a poor way to cuduct yourself IMO.

Yo dude maybe your air filter is clogged Or maybe just maybe after cleaning the maf & iac all that movement broke the clog loose from the air filter and it wedged its self in the throttle body not allowing it to close or per say "idle down" thus holding the rpms at 3k in any gear and all speeds?
I mean your example doesnt really state if he cleaned it before or after the proplem occured it just says it was cleaned lol. Also was the rotary button changed? Or the coils? Hard to say really I mean theres alot more to ignition that plugs and plug wires. Maybe its a burnt valve?
lol j/k
Well I am no expert by any means but not everyone knows as much as the next guy but after all this is a public forum so shouldnt we all be allowed to express our opinion even if its right or wrong? I mean just because someones suggestion isnt the same as yours doesnt make them an idiot in my book but what do I know?
For example:
Hey I have a 93 4.0 auto ranger and the trans is slipping, any advice?
Buy new wrenches.
lol if it was something as dumb as that then yes I could see the point in getting on here and starting a thread about "idiots" but I dont think anyone is posting stuff like that :givemebee
mxracer652 Feb 17 2009, 12:52pm after all this is a public forum so shouldnt we all be allowed to express our opinion even if its right or wrong?
Only if an opinion is asked for. Like "which wheels do you like better".
As your post agrees, opinions (and guessing) are not for TECH sections.
IMHO, this is what is wrong with most people today. Nobody is held accountable for their actions & life is treated as some rec league where everybody wins. I also think this is why some of us who are straightforward & don't sugar coat things are labeled as arrogant.
I'll be the first here to admit I don't know $hit. When I read a post & can't provide any help (real help, not guessing), guess what? I don't post.
Primer88 Feb 17 2009, 01:08pm Deal with it. We aren't going to chase every thread on there and delete retarded responses to tech questions. There is no way to get around it.
mxracer652 Feb 17 2009, 01:12pm Fair enough.
But am I going to be reprimanded for calling Bull$hit when I see it?

Well people are asking for tech help via forums so 90% of answers you get are someones opinion of what the problem could be. Most people who reply go by knowledge or experience so if someone had a car that acted funny due to a clogged air filter in their mind they may believe that is the problem in this case as well. I don't think labeling them as an idiot is fair not everyone who posts is master ase certified but they have just as much right to post as the ase mechanic if they feel its a helpful suggestion.
Its the things you don't know that you will learn not the other way around.
01_ranger_4x4 Feb 17 2009, 01:28pm Fair enough.

i dont think throwing the BS flag should be an issue if someone is giving incorrect info, but i think the way its said is what alot of people have issues with. there is no reason to be a prick because some one is mistaken in there info.
Swapper Feb 17 2009, 04:41pm What really gets me is people answering a question without really reading the question. How many times I see it clearly stated that it's a 4x2 and people come up with answers for a 4x4. Same goes for info on info for a manual and people come up with "Use a C-4/C-6". Take the time and read!

DelaRanger95' Feb 17 2009, 06:27pm im no expert even tho i like to act like i am haha
at my school I am the authority to talk about cars there!
i try to help to the best of my abilities and if i cant i usually let the masters answer teh question
although having a rating/ranking system would be kinda cool IMO
ive seen other forums that have it and it is a neat idea
Fair enough.
But am I going to be reprimanded for calling Bull$hit when I see it?
Not unless you just go around digging up every post that appears to be BS to you and call them on it. There are limits to everything, so saying you would be fine to stir up something in every post that you see fit to would be going too far. I'll call BS on them or tell them I think it's the wrong answer myself if I see it.
But I'm not going to visit every thread in every board and find opportunities to do it. And I wouldn't encourage anyone else to do it either.
lilsport07 Feb 19 2009, 01:10pm Also you have people that are just out to stir up the pot. And or else just think that they are being funny. Most people who are on here are just trying to help the next man and or else better themselves. But you do have the 1% rule. the 1% of the population that feels a need to screw everything up. Someone like me is on this site sporadically I might not have as many posts but i might still know the answere to the question but with out very many rep points someone might think i dont know what i am talking about. So you basically need to take every piece of advice with a grain of salt.
SilverBullet32 Feb 19 2009, 06:19pm i think that using dumb words or replacement words is unneccessary, it takes the same amount of time to spell the word right, it makes me frustrated when people do that because it takes twice as long to read. But overall, any help or ideas does help, i don't like the ranking system though, in my opinion.

x2 on the ranking system. it was used on a local forum and it created nothing but chaos.
superman22x Feb 19 2009, 08:43pm We have a rep system over at computerforums.org, which is also on Vbullitin. It's not that great really. You can give a couple rep points if what someone posted is helpful. But most of the rep points come from the posts in teh social lounge anyway, as most of the questions are asked by new members, which until you get rep, you can't give it, and the new members don't even know about the rep system. So most of the rep comes from funny posts in the social lounge from longstanding members that know about the system.
And with people posting wrong ideas about whats wrong... deal with it. There is an ignore feature if I am not mistaken. We newbs need to learn somewhere though. The best way to learn is by mistake... Post count doesnt mean anything to me either. I would be fine with getting rid of post count all togethor.
lilsport07 Feb 20 2009, 08:40am cheers to that superman
