View Full Version : brake pads?
sv44mag Feb 15 2002, 05:20pm well i heard the little chirping sound coming from my brakes today so it looks like its time for some new brake pads. i've got chrome cobras so i'm looking for some pads that dont give off alot of dust. i'm not looking to spend a fortune, so whats a good middle of the line pad?
Touring23 Feb 15 2002, 06:30pm I'm having good luck with Raybestos' PGD-249, they list a couple of different compounds at their website.
Ninety6Ranger Feb 15 2002, 08:00pm I'm using Wearever Gold pads from Advance. Seem to be ok with break dust. I have to clean my rims about every 3-4 days or so. They are the middle pad. If you want a little better pad go with the Bendix. They are the factory orignals and are pretty good on break dust also. Just stay away from the cheep pads... they are usualy harder and well eat your rotors quicker. Thats what i've found out.
Also, you pads might be ok. Sometimes they well squeek from break dust. You might try spraying a hose at them and see what that does. Later,
Matt
Adam Baker Feb 15 2002, 08:40pm YEa, its entirely possibly that its just some dust. Or could be that you have hit a hard spot in the pad. But if it is time for new pads, I would definatly recommend Bendix or Performance Friction pads. You could also look into ceramic pads. They cost more, and dont last as long, but they tend to make less noise then semi metallic and they dont seem to make as much dust. But I dont have any personal experience w/ ceramic pads. Ive never installed any at work, so Im just going off what Ive read & have beeen told/.
Wangel Feb 15 2002, 09:00pm Performance Friction are what are used on the Police Cars here in Kansas. The NAPA ceramic are also top rated, but are probably the most expensive. I normally go for the ceramic or performance friction on my cars. I don't like to skimp on brakes and always buy the very best no matter what the cost. Sometimes I'm a bit hard on my vehicle and I don't want the brakes fadeing.
I've had good luck with the Bendix/Wagner premium semi-metallic pads too. I've not noticed as much dust from them as the factory pads.
Ninety6Ranger Feb 16 2002, 12:19am Yeah, Bendix has been around forever. They were one of the first companies around when it comes to brakes. The Wearever pads (ie. Gold and silver) are also made from Wagner. I work at Advance so thats how I know all this. From what i've been told.... the Wearever Gold pads actually have a higher rating than the Bendix. Weather this is true or not..
sv44mag Feb 16 2002, 07:00am well i'm headed down to the little local auto parts store today after work. i hope they have a few of the kinds you guys were talking about. i'll post back on what i got.
Adam Baker Feb 16 2002, 04:43pm Well, I can tell you from personal experience installing Bendix & WearEver pads, that the Bendix are by far a much better pad. Ive done dozens of brake jobs at work, and if we order pads from an outside source, 99% of the time its from Advance, so we either get the WearEver or the Bendix. And the Bendix pads rarely ever come back w/ complaints, but the WearEver seem to generate quiet a few complaints.

sv44mag Feb 16 2002, 05:14pm well i got the pads on this afternoon. the little auto parts store i went to had wagner brake pads. i dont know which model they were, but i went for a test drive and they seem to be better then my stock ones were. when i tested them out, i did a few hard stops and they felt pretty good. so i have no complaints yet. it was the first time i changed brake pads and it wasnt too bad.

You don't want to do that on new pads unless you have to. It will glaze them and they won't stop as well. Give them a few miles of regular stopping to wear into the rotor before you try really hard stops.
Ninety6Ranger Feb 16 2002, 09:37pm Lol... yea you want to let them break in before any hard stopping. It takes about 50-100 miles for them to set. I know when I put my new pads/rotors on when I got to work they were smoking. Looked pretty cool.
sv44mag Feb 17 2002, 09:43am ha, well i didnt know that. i just wanted to make sure that if i did have to stop hard i wasnt gonna die. hey you learn something new everyday:E
