This is sort of ranger related.

My dad has a 90 Aerostar van with a 4.0 and 5 speed manual transmission. The tranny is shot and I am trying to find out what other transmissions will bolt up. I think the same tranny was in rangers and mustangs, but not positive. Please let me know soon because the shop has the van now and is saying that to rebuild the one in the van would be $1500!! I am sure I can get a pre rebuilt one or one from a low milage ranger/mustang if it is the same for less money then that! Thanks for your help!!

Well, I'm not certain, but I've heard that the 4.0's from the aerostar is the same engine in the 4.0 rangers. So I would imagine that the tranny would be the same also. See if you can get the model # of the tranny from the van, and compare that. You could also try calling a wrecker... they usually have a complete crossreference chart for those kind of things. That is what I did when I was looking for a new tranny for my 88.

It's definitely not the same trans as was used in Mustangs. Those are T50's. The Ranger mostly uses the Mazda M50D trans. I don't know if they are directly interchangeable though, but I'd think they would be. The driveshaft is probably the difference.
