Bgdowski Aug 31 2009, 02:27pm Hey guys. I figured i would begin my thread for my 5.0L HO/T5 swap into a 97 longbed. This is just a typical swap, nothing insane. Please leave input on it, even though im still gathering parts and getting everything together.
Here are some pictures:
The swap candidate:

The motor/trans is out of an 88 GT. with 100k on the clock. Never been modified, never opened up. Ran great when pulled. Still has SD, EGR, and emissions equip. Ill be deleting the AC, EGR, and emissions junk.
Ill update later with my parts list and more info. Thanks for looking!

x2 motor looks clean, and nice to see its a manual trans. good luck with the build.
Flying Horseradish Aug 31 2009, 04:13pm and i just realized that we both live in daytona, where in daytona you live?

I live in the LPGA golf community :rotfl:... Where abouts do you live?
The motor is extremely clean, as you can see in my Avatar, I "wrinkle finished" the valve covers and intake manifold. I'm very happy with it, and ill post some decent pictures of it hopefully tonight.

I wouldn't do it any other way than manual. Unless it was going to be a 1/4 mile bracket whore.
Dange Aug 31 2009, 05:02pm So whats a decent price for a 5.0 engine and trans...
Most likely the best bet would be a donor car correct?

I live in port orange in willow run. Im also curious about the cost in a motor and trans? i really been wanting to swap a 5.0 in my truck, ive been saving up some money for it.
Bgdowski Aug 31 2009, 05:13pm Well, for referance, i picked up my motor, trans, wiring harness, and computer for $750.00 In my case it came with everything from the clutch to the sensors to the shifter knob. It was a very compete package, almost as complete as pulling it from a donor car. The only things i have found to be missing is the VSS and Water Temp Sensor.
I dont think it is as cost effective to pull it from a donor vehicle, especially if you dont have the room for an extra junker at your house.
Here are some pictures of the Wrinkle finish (pardon my camera phone):

And here is what it looked like after I pulled it out of the bed of my ranger after a 9 hour haul from Atlanta, GA:

I have budgeted for a sub $2,000 swap. Make spreadsheets of what you wish to purchase to reach your goal before you start buying. It will give you an accurate amount that you will be spending + a couple hundred for a safety blanket.
superman22x Aug 31 2009, 05:49pm The spread sheet idea is good... I bought a $25 motor when I started. Didn't need it, but I wanted to rebuild it for learning... I was thinking it would be a cheap and easy swap. Easily could have gotten to be $700 or so if I did it in the Ranger... I ended up spending $500 on a Mustang when the Padres said no to the Ranger...

yea i have about 1200 saved up, and yea id love a donor car but like you stated i just don't have the room for it.

I'm sure you know this by now, but you'll use the VSS and water temp sensor from your Ranger.
Looks good so far.
Dange Sep 01 2009, 03:03am Mainly because I am ignorant, but what is a VSS?
ddranger Sep 01 2009, 05:43am vehicle speed sensor
Teddyzee Sep 01 2009, 07:32am Mainly because I am ignorant, but what is a VSS?
vehicle speed sensor
It's what we used to call the speedometer cable, lol. A '97 has no cable, earlier trucks had bothe VSS and cable (in the same location on the trans) the newer trucks have the VSS in the rearend.

I was just using this as an example of how complete my engine was. Thanks for making sure though!
1mean02hd Sep 01 2009, 02:56pm Some suggestions- First- put an 8.8 out of a 4.0L truck or an Exploder. Second- hopefully this will be later down the road- TUB it! It would be sick to see some steamrollers on the back of that thing.
Bgdowski Sep 01 2009, 08:42pm Haha I am more than on top of the 8.8, trust me. Ive been hunting through Scrap Yards for a 3 L 73 forever... Im pretty sure ill find one on my pilgrimage to Orlando U-Pull-It this weekend.
And on the note of tubs, The widest ill be packin for a while is a 10.5 steet radial. So I wont really have the need for tubs just yet.
Bgdowski Sep 25 2009, 09:19pm A little update.
I Picked up an 8.8 3L73 today from a fewllow RPS member. The unit is pretty new, and has 30k on a full rebuild. The locker is nice and tight, and has brand new hardware throughout (including brakes). Ill be installing it in the morning. Ill post pictures.
Bgdowski Oct 01 2009, 11:34am Had a problem with the rear end (surprise surprise) The drums are rubbing, so i need to adjust the shoes and i need to bend up some new brake lines because the old ones were rotted and we found some holes in it during installation. Hopefully it will go in this weekend, along with my Walbro 255lph in-tank fuel pump.
Bgdowski Oct 11 2009, 11:36am I have the rear end in now, it works great. I also changed the fluid in it...
Pic update!
Also, got my headers in the mail and mocked them up on my block.

Teddyzee Oct 11 2009, 01:11pm Tip:
Bolt your mounts to the block with your headers on there, while on the stand. i needed to shave the corner of one mount slightly. Muuch easier while on the stand than saying WTF? while trying to do it in the truck!
I did the corner of both mounts, in case I flipped them side to side. (My mounts were marked R and L, and went on correctly, offsetting the engine to the rear)
Bgdowski Oct 11 2009, 01:54pm Thanks for the tip man! Its stuff like this that makes these forums worth it. When I pick up my mounts ill be sure to mock them up and make necessary modifications.
TS6034 Oct 11 2009, 05:42pm Good choice on the rear axle, you'll really be glad you got that limited slip once it's running and driving. I'm looking forward to watching this build..

I got to do a little testing on it so far, because the truck is still my DD. It lays some good rubber and feels very solid. Please stay tuned, I always look forward to comments and tips along the way.
3L73 it may be, but it's not a 8.8.
What makes you say that?
Bgdowski Oct 11 2009, 07:01pm I found a useful illustration to help diferentiate between the 7.5'' and 8.8'' rear end...
7.5''

Foxracin Oct 11 2009, 08:11pm Yea, thats a 8.8.
B 347 Oct 12 2009, 06:44am The lighting on the cover makes it look like a 7.5
My mistake... :nixweiss:
1mean02hd Oct 12 2009, 11:00am Using those Tri-Ys you might need to clearance the frame ever so slightly on the passenger side. Just the top part of the rail. Check my thread I may have pics of the clearancing (I forget). Otherwise they will fit great.
What motor mounts are you using?
Bgdowski Oct 13 2009, 03:30pm Ill be using 94/95 energy suspension mustang mounts.
Bgdowski Oct 21 2009, 08:31am Here are some pictures of the rear end swap, to keep the thread alive. Ive been busy lately, so the fuel pump hasnt gone in yet. Hopefully this weekend it will.

TS6034 Oct 21 2009, 12:37pm Whats with the Michigan license plate? It's not often that people from FL would shop in MI for a vehicle. Lol
Bgdowski Oct 21 2009, 01:39pm Haha good question. Im from MI, and am only down here to go to school. Im in the mitten during breaks and for the summer, along with my truck :)
Bgdowski Oct 21 2009, 04:29pm Walbro 255 is now installed! I got the itch to work, and let it get the best of me. The bed is off, and im keeping it off for a while so i can strip and paint the frame, as well as replace the leaf springs.
Im still going to daily it while the bed is off :pimp2:

I have it stripped and in primer now, Ill probably mount it up tomorrow and start slingin some mud on it if it needs it. Ill post pics for ya!
Now im off to LKQ to get some new rear leafs and shackles... MI does terrible things to cars :errrr:

I hear ya, used to live there. Back in'03 I had a '92 Grand Marquis that had spent its whole life in MI, if you put the car on a lift you could physically see the car bending. I swear the only thing holding it together was the body, frame was shot.
Newks Oct 22 2009, 01:24pm I have budgeted for a sub $2,000 swap. Make spreadsheets of what you wish to purchase to reach your goal before you start buying. It will give you an accurate amount that you will be spending + a couple hundred for a safety blanket.
I <3 spreadsheets the wifey swears I live my life by them lol. I never start a project with out one. I soo want a long bed gen3
Bgdowski Oct 22 2009, 02:53pm Okay, so a little hang up on the project. My leaf spring mounts are terrible, and i need to buy some new ones.... awesome!

How much are leafs at Lkq? I been meaning to get some here soon along with the brake lines so i can install my 8.8.
Bgdowski Oct 22 2009, 09:21pm I paid 60 bucks. Not terrible. core charge for each is 2 bucks. it took about 15 minutes to pull them, i found one without a bed and i had an impact.
Bgdowski Nov 07 2009, 11:41am So here are some updates... I got my motor mounts in (FINALLY). I mounted them up on the motor, with the headers installed and i have no clearance problems at all. The closest it gets is on the driver's side. Its about 1/4'' away from the header. I got the Prothane Motion Control 94/95 mustang mounts along with the Energy Suspension transmission mount...
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_nC-kcr0frWM/SvR-nYqQIgI/AAAAAAAAAcE/q0xLfwOac20/s640/1106091451.jpg
I also hit the machine shop for a little bit and knocked out my clutch slave mount. It turned out pretty well, and all i need to finish my clutch system is a return spring... FOX, i was hopin you could chime in on where you got yours from...

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_nC-kcr0frWM/SvWuEC3-zlI/AAAAAAAAAcM/elvmFqEaroU/s640/1107091223.jpg
I guess my next step is to go pick up a 4.0L radiator...
T-minus one month to engine swap....
Teddyzee Nov 07 2009, 11:55am Good stuff!
I didn't use a return spring, BTW.
Is that a Mustang trans mount, or Ranger? Just wondering, because the bolt spacing is different on the trans crossmember. Not a big deal to re-drill, just wanted to save you that moment of "oh sht"!
Bgdowski Nov 07 2009, 11:58am Its a mustang mount, Im going to fab up a plate to mount it to or just move the crossmember... Not sure what to do yet, but thanks for reminding me the bolt spacing is off...
Why did you not have to use a return spring? Why did FOX use one? educate me!
Teddyzee Nov 07 2009, 12:23pm He probably had one there to use, lol! I just figured the pressure plate would push it back. I hava bunch of preload on it anyway.
Used a longer rod in the slave, made of simple threaded rod. Then cranked and cranked and cranked on it to get enough preload, so I would have enough travel to disengage the clutch, and find the perfect spot so it would also release enough.
I also had to run a master from an '89 2.9 ranger (with 7/8" bore) to get enough travel. (the stock on our years is 5/8"). Not sure if I posted that here in your thread before or not. Also available in other Rangers over about a 4 year span, but '89 2.9 is one application I remember off the top of my head.
NAPA P/N NNC39896.
I had to mod my clutch pedal bracket slightly, as the old masters bolt to the firewall. (ours clip into the pedal bracket) Some details and pics are in my build thread.
1mean02hd Nov 08 2009, 06:05pm I didn't use a return spring either. As far as the master cylinder goes, my 94 bolts to the firewall as well. Guessing this might be a 7/8" bore?? Dunno but my clutch works fine with it.
Bgdowski Nov 12 2009, 04:26pm I picked up a 4.0L radiator yesterday along with a 5.0L exploder throttle cable... the cable seems to be binding a bit, but that may just be a mounting problem...
Foxracin Nov 12 2009, 05:31pm Get a Lokar throttle cable. Hands down the best ones out there and not all that expensive.
Bgdowski Nov 12 2009, 10:36pm Fox, you are the boss... Link me to the model ill want :werd:
mrmrrck Nov 13 2009, 08:20pm Bg, Is the motor in yet? Pics?
Bgdowski Dec 11 2009, 07:22am Well guys, the engine swap us underway... The front clip is off of the truck, the motor is out, and the trans is out. I pretty much have the engine bay prepped. Today my goals are:
Clean the engine compartment
POR-15 the frame
Modify the radiator support, and mock up the 4.0L radiator
Strip accessories off of the 5.0L, and get it ready to drop in.
Mount slave cylinder to bellhousing
Hopefully get the motor dropped in....
Turns out that the clutch pedal assembly i picked up from a fellow member was from the wrong year, so i need to find one from a 97. If anybody knows of one, PM me!
Long day of work ahead of me!

Bgdowski Dec 14 2009, 09:51am Well guys, the motor is in and sitting under its own weight with the motor/trans mounts bolted in. The headers have sufficient clearance on both sides, and now its just down to plumbing and verifying my wiring is correct.
Capt. Obvious Dec 15 2009, 09:55am Awesome...I hope to do a 5.0 swap one day...I'll be looking back to these threads for info for sure!
Bgdowski Dec 15 2009, 09:58am If it wasnt for these threads i wouldnt have done it. Time to go get some more work done on it :) ill put up some progress pictures later
Bgdowski Dec 24 2009, 12:13pm Im currently home in MI for the holidays (merry x-mas everyone) and my ranger is stuck in FL, only a few hours of work away from running. All that is left is a lower radiator hose, finishing the oil filter relocation, plugging in the harness ive made, and then fluids and bleeding/adjusting my clutch... Its sad that i'm so close but cant touch it for another week or two.
So what do you get when you put a bunch of college kids (mostly electrical and aeronautical engineers) into a garage with tools and extra motors?!?!

Flying Horseradish Dec 28 2009, 09:55pm Looks great man!! I've started to get some parts for mine an putting in my 8.8 this weekend. How was the swap itself?
TS6034 Dec 29 2009, 12:21am Looks good man! But no heater? You must plan on keeping that truck in Florida! Lol. Michigan summers can be cool sometimes, which is why I opted to keep my heat.
Bgdowski Dec 29 2009, 10:10am Looks great man!! I've started to get some parts for mine an putting in my 8.8 this weekend. How was the swap itself?
Honest to god, the swap was not hard. The most irritating part was getting the old motor out. Once that was out, it has been absolute smooth sailing. I think my over-planning for the swap paid off in that aspect. I never really ran into anything unexpected either. I should be back in daytona in a little over a week and it should be done soon. Once its done we should get a meet together.

Lets put it this way, for the next two years its only going to see Michigan in the summers. And during that time, im going to be sure to keep a hooded sweatshirt on reserve behind my seat. I have plans to later add a hot rod style heater or re-fit the original one back in. Its just not really a priority right now..

All in good time, n00b:rotfl:
Bgdowski Jan 19 2010, 01:26pm Well, i have not been able to successfully adjust the clutch to not slip, so im going to swap my Clutch master tonight to one with a larger bore and see if the extra throw will fix my issues. All thats left before it becomes my daily again is putting the front clip back on and getting an electric fan... maybe an exhaust:blahblah:
Bgdowski Jan 19 2010, 09:39pm Just took about an hour and swapped in the 7/8'' bore master i had laying around, from an older year ranger... Installed very easily, and followed the directions that Teddyzee posted up (http://www.rangerpowersports.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2140250&postcount=20) except i didnt have to cut my aluminium clutch bracket at all for it to fit, my master seems to be shorter, so it doesnt protrude as far as his did. Ill probably get some pictures up eventually. Im going to bleed it tomorrow when i have some help, and test drive it until i have it correctly adjusted. Ill be picking up my electric fan tomorrow, hopefully and getting the front end put back on so that its road legal.
Teddyzee Jan 20 2010, 10:22am Good stuff!

What happened to the black manifold and what headers are those? :tongue
TS6034 Feb 02 2010, 12:32pm The headers look like mine. Shelby tri-y's.
Bgdowski Feb 02 2010, 12:32pm What happened to the black manifold and what headers are those? :tongue
I did the manifold in black VHT wrinklefinish, and i didnt follow the time intervals on spraying it correctly because i got distracted and it ended up looking kinda crappy, so i just repainted the manifold and valvecovers with grey.. Boring, i know. The headers are Shelby Tri-Y's from summit... part number H8426... Made by Patriot. Great fit!

Great, thanks guys!
Edit: sorry 4 the hijack
jotec409 Feb 02 2010, 06:25pm will those gauges work with the stock sensors?
DougNuts Feb 02 2010, 07:11pm will those gauges work with the stock sensors?
The autometer ones will not.
For oil pressure, you can either get a T fitting and run both, or just replace your stock sending unit with the Autometer.
For the water temp, you would probably need to buy one of these: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ATM-2283/ or you can get the thermostat housing drilled and tapped, which is what I did on my (94) Mustang way back when. There should be a small flat spot that's ripe for it.
Bgdowski Feb 02 2010, 11:49pm will those gauges work with the stock sensors?
My autometers both came with electric sensors, Which i replaced my stock sensors with... This rendered the stock gauges for water and oil useless, but they are just dummy gauges anyways... I could theoretically tee them off, but i didnt feel like getting the fittings for it.
Orion_134 Feb 03 2010, 07:45am Looks good.
Bgdowski Feb 03 2010, 08:18am Looks good.
Thanks man, the rear end is holding up for me pretty well for now.
Orion_134 Feb 03 2010, 09:36am And it should, it wasn't rebuilt that long ago. Sounds like we need a race in the future:)
Bgdowski Feb 03 2010, 12:42pm We sure do! Did you put the snail on yet, or are you still spraying?
Orion_134 Feb 05 2010, 11:25am Sold the spray, never had any intention of using it. College budget is pretty tight, so right now I'm getting a list together of all that I want a scouring the forums looking for good deals. However, the first thing I'm spending money on is getting rid of this 3550 setup for a 4R70W auto with a nice converter.
