Alright this might be a stupid question but I'm very new to this whole game. I'm thinking of putting a sub, possibly two in the back of my truck sometime later this summer early fall. So I was looking at stuff and I just want to know what the heck a crossover is.

Basically all a crossover is is a device that filters out certain frequencies of sound. Like for you sub you don't want the high frequencies going through to the sub all you want are the low ones.

Wed, crossovers come in many different types but as juicedup20 already said, all they do is filter out certain frequencies going to each speaker thus providing you with better control over how your system will sound.
Some crossovers come with the speakers that you attach to just those speakers, others are built right into amp's and then you can also have a stand alone elec. crossover that you can connect multiple amp's too. You can also make your own if you know what your doing (not me). If your going to us two amp's in your install (1-for mids & highs and 1 for the subs) then get an elec. crossover, it makes setting everything a lot easier. I would suggest using a 4 channel amp for the mids & highs and a 2 channel bridgeable amp for the subs. This will give you the flexibility to turn up or down the bass without effecting the mids & highs and do the same thing for the mids & highs without effecting the bass. I hope this helps and remember, everyone's gotta learn sometime so the only stupid question is the one not asked. If you want any help with the install just give me a ring,,,,, I work for free.
