View Full Version : Big Block Ranger
TS6034 Oct 05 2009, 02:54pm Well, after getting my 5.0 ranger driveable, (still not done) I came across another ranger for cheap that I didn't want to pass up. It's a 91 2wd 3.0 auto long box.

TS6034 Oct 05 2009, 02:56pm For the engine and trans, I have a 460 and C6 that came out of a '77 Lincoln. The car had 34,000 miles on it. Sat in a barn and the frame rusted.
I don't plan on doing a rebuild at this time since I'm still putting money into the other ranger. I just plan on doing a few simple mods to wake the engine up a little and get it out of its "smog" coma that Ford put it into back in the 70s.

Teddyzee Oct 05 2009, 03:02pm Geez, looks like the other one! This should be fun to watch.
matt167 Oct 05 2009, 04:34pm b4 dropping that engine in, get a new cam, timing set and aftermarket or DOVE heads.. those late 460's are extremely anemic and need a little to wake them up. without it, your 5.0L truck will walk all over it.. nice project tho

Yeah, whats with that? All my trucks are red! And this truck has ugly red interior. It's aweful, I might try to change it.

I plan on a new cam, straight up timing gear and chain, intake manifold and carb. I have the D3VE heads. I was told they are good heads once some home porting is done on the exhaust side. But I've been watching craigslist for the D0VE heads.
superman22x Oct 05 2009, 06:43pm The problem with those heads is a larger chamber isn't it? Or is it the pistons that lower compression? That's the biggest problem with those engines I thought.
matt167 Oct 05 2009, 06:45pm yea, D3ve are workable
BlueMan Oct 05 2009, 06:58pm I hope you plan on upgrading the rear axle and some traction aides to handle the torque that thing can pump out at low RPMs!

From what I've learned, the low compression is due more to the deep dished pistons. Ford also retarded the cam. I guess this was done back when emissions became popular and gas was scarce.

Yes, I will upgrade the rear axle. Either an 8.8 or a 9 inch. I'm thinking maybe ladder bars with coil overs. Not sure yet.
superman22x Oct 05 2009, 09:12pm Are you going to deck the block and heads? Or swap out the pistons to get some more compression then? Or just leave it as is?
They retarded the cam? lmfao, does that actually save gas? I guess it moves the powerband down so the peak power is at a lower RPM...
TS6034 Oct 05 2009, 10:39pm I guess the reason the cam was retarded was for emissions. Alot of guys say the first thing to do with these are get an early (pre '72) timing chain and gears. I'm pulling the heads off it and have plans on replacing the cam. I also have to change the oil pickup and pan. With it tore down to the block, I'm kind of thinking of new pistons and bearings. Just pistons alone will bring up the compression. I will have the heads shaved when I figure out what combo I'm using and where it will put the compression.
Swapper Oct 06 2009, 06:59am Retarding cam and raising the deck height was also done on the small blocks from '73-76'. Also used a piston with more of a dish, 302's only had 8:1 compression.

Gee this is sounding familiar....
Watch out, before you know it, you'll be building an aluminum headed stroker motor. lmao!

I was hopeing you would chime in! I have a few uncetainties that you could clear up for me. Where did you get the engine mounts that you ended up using? What bracketry did you use for the alternator and power steering pump?
83bagged Oct 06 2009, 02:50pm OMG tom... now you have to help me wit mine before this thing is runnin BEFORE MINE!
i swear if this things drives before mine, im quitting! lol...
oh hey V8 guys, this is the "wifes truck" he has to paint it PINK.....
:P tom

Basically, they are Mustang fox body swap mounts minus the rubber isolators which makes them a solid mount. The driver's side has a piece of 1" square tube added to offset the engine to the pass side a dab.

I do not have a PS pump, and I just used a stock 460 low alternator mount.
TS6034 Oct 06 2009, 09:01pm Guys, Dane (83bagged) is talkin smack! It's my truck! Lol. Some day you will be married and have to come up with some creative excuses to buy stuff you don't need too! Ha ha.
Dane, if you would quit wasting time watching Dancing with the Stars and spend more time on the truck, it would get built! Haha!
I ran into a setback. Tore the engine down and found the cylinders in bad condition. It appears some moisture got into the cylinders. So I guess a complete rebuild is in order.
TS6034 Oct 06 2009, 09:04pm JP3, I spend some time searching the big block forums, but couldn't find the information on how you plumbed the oil lines into the block without using an adapter.
BTW- No power steering pump? How'd ya steer that monster?

just like how i steer my 1930 ford.. get it rolling a little bit and it turns easy

It steers fine with the manual box.
Thread from when I was messing with all that oil filter stuff. Of course you *could* raise the motor an inch or so and have enough clearance for an adapter, but I really felt the place I put the motor was where it really needed to be in the chassis.

This is how it ended up:

I should have pointed the 90° elbow coming out of the block down instead of towards the front of the block.
I *might* do it a little different on the new block. I will keep you informed if I come up with something else. I have a friend with a machine shop and CNC stuff I might hit him up to make me a custom filter blockoff plate.
83bagged Oct 06 2009, 11:22pm HAHAHHA its ok tom. we will all see it pink ...in the end.
and i dont watch that retarted show, the girlfriend has me watching greys anatomy, the seasons. and yea i actually like watching it rofl! i dont care LOL
(MY TRUCK AINT GONNA BE PINK!) lmao
TS6034 Nov 20 2009, 09:15pm Small update...I found this while browsing craigslist (which I do daily)
The guy said it was from a 97. It has 3.73's and limited slip

TS6034 Dec 04 2009, 06:37pm Can somebody chime in here and help me out. I recently came across a 98 ranger in decent shape for a fair price. I went and looked at it with the intentions of abandening the 91 and building the 98. My plan on the 91 wast to fab some over the frame headers for the 460. The 98 doesn't have much room for headers to wrap around the outside of the frame because of the front suspension.
My question is, would it even be possible to squeeze headers between the engine and frame rails like we do with the small blocks? I know they sell block hugger headers but I've never seen or heard of anyone with a 98 or later ranger with a 460 based engine.
Bgdowski Dec 04 2009, 08:23pm One solution... Tubular front end on the 98 :wiggle:
aaronbellmx355 Dec 14 2009, 08:59pm I love the red interior I think it would look sweet in my black 5.0
aaronbellmx355 Dec 14 2009, 09:04pm oh to help you out with your question about the headers, I dont think headers will fit between the frame. but you seem like you have the skills to sneak them somewhere. and it would def. be sick to see that 460 in a 98
dalpilot Dec 14 2009, 09:27pm Heck thats not even gonna be tight. Well to me anyway. LOL
Here is a 2000 model. The guy recessed the firewall and was able to use under chassis headers. The headers were old Cragar headers for a van with one tube modified.

aaronbellmx355 Dec 15 2009, 09:01pm nice, i think you should go for it how much you want for 91?
TS6034 Dec 16 2009, 12:37am I think I'll just stick with the 91. I just have a thing for the 98's.
Aaron, I'd gladly trade my red interior for grey. What color is yours?
aaronbellmx355 Dec 16 2009, 08:33pm tan....aaaaaaaahhhhhhh
TS6034 Dec 17 2009, 10:17am Yeah, no thanks. Lol.
aaronbellmx355 Dec 17 2009, 09:11pm yea I looked at a new mustang, I think the salesman called it the california red interior. I liked the looks of it so i'm going to try and copy it. I also want to get some red smootie 15's with big old white wall tires and do the hot rod flatz black exterior paint. I'm kinda goin for the retro/ clean look.
TS6034 Dec 18 2009, 01:26am Do you mean you going with the look from the movie Cars? Lol
aaronbellmx355 Dec 18 2009, 10:17pm fo sho. lol idk people look at me and see young punk, but I have a deep respect for the 70's and 80's hot rod looks. but yea when I get going on my exterior design the name of the build will be the cars theme haha.
when your ready to sell your bagged 5.0 let me know first. I'll give you what you would want for it. real sick truck.
TS6034 Dec 18 2009, 11:11pm How much ya got? Lol
aaronbellmx355 Dec 19 2009, 05:27pm lol I expected that answer. I cant give you anything right now, just booked the honeymoon trip to Jamacia In june when i get married so all the free cash goes there. But I am still putting money into my ranger too haha.
