My friend got ahold of a spare MAS from a newer 3.0l for his 93 3.0l truck. He ported it a bit and polished it nice and smooth and when he put it on his truck, the damn thing loped like it had a cam. It wouldn't rev over 4k rpm, and took a while to get there at all. Aside from that, he got about 220 miles out of 19 gallons of gas, so that's another negative. So, what did he do wrong?? I've heard of plenty of people porting theirs and no running problems. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance..

Sometimes that just happens. Mine worked fine and my mpg went up. This is all I can think of, did he use his original electronics(i did), did he clean the electronics with a proper cleaner, did he clean the mas very carefully and many times, and did he check all conections? Thats all I can think of. Some people say you should inplug the battery for 30 min or more but i only did mine for a couple.

sounds like it needs a good cleaning.....the wires in the tube,as well as the body itself......while the cables are disconnected,,,cleaning goes on,ecu is reset and when putting back together, make sure that the connections are tight........i have heard of a few that said it ran like sh** for a few days but leveled out

well, he used the original electronics, but maybe it just needs to be cleaned...and he did check all of the wiring, etc...maybe it's dirty, or maybe he just modified the crap out of it and it didn't like it :)

Well I did the mod a while back and I reset the computer and all. But before the motor came up to operating temp it lopped like it had a huge cam in it. Once it heated up it was fine. And after about a week it stopped completely. Pulled like a totally different motor you could hear it sucking something fierce. But had lots of pinging. So I took it off and stuck a piece of tubing in the sampler tube to make it smaller, heard someone say it might help the pinging. But got even worse. Idled at about 300 RPM (that's right) and pinged extremely bad. Sticking the pedal to the floor resulted in poor throttle response and only revved to like 3000 tops. Now I have the stock unit on. Pinging is completely gone and lost a lot of power. I think I may cut the sampler tube out and have the sensor just sticking down into the stream of air and clean the little wires off w/ contact cleaner. Otherwise the MAF is useless to me.

Yep, mine ran like fecal matter for a few hours and later pulled like mad with a killer growl.

well, maybe he should try cleaning it and driving for a while. he used about 3/4 tank of gas in two days trying to get it to settle in. He reset the computer (disconnected battery) and started it and let it idle for about 5 minutes. Then he tried to drive it (the best he could, anyways) and it never woul dget anywhere near normal power, even the next day when he tried it again. Maybe he modded it too much?
