It is kinda hard to give an exact estimate, but I have had a few form mine. I have had as cheap as 500 (I think that was from a generic place like peach) and as high as about 3grand, but that included mild ghost flame. For a pretty good paint job with CC try in the range of 800 to 1 grand. You migh want to ask Kwikness, he works at a paint shop and whould have a better estimate than me.

on average, our paint jobs run in the area of $2500+.. that is without bodywork or anything extra like flames, pins, scallops, etc.............

just remember.. you always get what you pay for:)

i wanted to have my truck re-painted and then i found out how much money it was. maaco was the cheapest at $600. everyone else wanted $2500 to $3500 that is with mild body work(a few dents here and there small dents not big ones) and same color paint. i also got prices on just the tailgate and they ran from $250 to $500 to paint only the tailgate. man i wish i knew how to paint well.

I work for a body shop too. We usally charge 2000 for a paint job. That does not include body work. Let me give you some advice. It's better to pay 2000 for a good quality paint job and have it last than it is to pay 500 for one that is probably going to have to be redone. I've never seen a cheap paint job that last or is any good.

Yeah. Everybody just wants you to give them one for nothing.

I really think people just never realize how much paint jobs really cost, just look at how far off my estimate was .

The shops around my parts take advantage off this. They all have all given me low estimates, but when I have ever had work done by any of them it has been very cheap. I just wish there was one shop that would do a quality paint job. It wouldn't matter how much it cost as long as it was a peice of ****.

I can deffinitly comment on the matter. :) After hearing the estimates, I decided to paint my own truck. I can now see that most money comes from the equipment and not profit. When you think it takes about 1 tal or so of paint and clear, then add the numbers. Clear costs about $40 a qt. Then it's $30 for hardner at 8 oz. It's about $35 for a pint of paint. then you figure about $25 for a gallon of Reducer (which you have to use a certian kind depending on the weather.) Then your primer. Man. That depends on what kind you use as well. You can get a primer that has a sealer already in it. or you can just buy an epoxy sealer and spray your base coat on that. Or you can buy the Sealer and the Primer. Both of those run about $30 - $50 a qt(? i think) then you have to by a catalyst to mix with it. Then let's not forget your time and labor and the bondo and tools you use to fix dents. It adds up. I'm hoping to accomplish mine for under $1k

You also have to remember a good paint job is more than just tapeing off the windows.. it involves taking off every peice of trim, door handle, windows, etc. My friend has his Jeep repainted. It cost him 3,500. We walked in the shop and there were freakin parts everywhere! man that jeep was fully disassembled. It turned out awesome though.

Well i know that i have posted this before, but i can speak from experience with the maaco paint job, it sucks, they do not remove trim and it will not last more than 2 years. If you go to maaco, you will only go once. If i get my ranger repainted later on down the road, i am willing to pay $3500 for some quality work, but i want to see where it will be painted and other cars that have been painted.

I am wondering what all steps go into a complete quality paint job. I know that preperation is the most important but I have no clue what goes into the painting process. I always thought it was prime, paint, clear coat but obviously there are more steps to it then that.

Don't forget you have to wet sand between each of those steps if you want a really mirror smooth finish.

Want to here a crappy story.....

I am a young college guy, and just bought my second truck after having 250,000 on my first one. This one is a 1992 Ford Ranger. I love it and we take care of each other. Anyway, I was at work and the guys who are painting the school stop the cars far enough away from the epoxy paint they were spraying. Now it looks like I have a permanent coat of dust and pollen over my entire car. You guys understand. Its probably like finding that first scratch on a 2001. There insurance company is going to get in contact with everyone one of us. Has anyone had any experiences like this? What should I expect/demand of the insurance company? Later.

I've got a new respect for those paint shop prices...My friend just painted his 91 Ranger a few weeks ago...he painted it the new GM yellow (like on the Sport GMC's), and that stuff was $78 a quart...all in all he spent around $800-850 for all the paint/clear/primer, etc. Plus the $300 compressor, plus the gun (he got a good gun for pretty cheap and rebuilt it), plus the time it took him. He took EVERYTHING off and taped everything perfect..I can definitely see how it would cost $3k at a shop....

don't forget proper breathing apparatus. Man, if you inhale *any* of that toxic stuff, it goes right to your head (ie, kills brain cells). Isocyanates are not to be taken lightly! The catalysts in paint nowadays is terrible. I want to repaint mine, but don't have the equipment...(breathing that is)...not worth risking my health for IMHO.

I wonder if scuba gear would work? :) prolly too heavy
