I have a '96 Ranger 4.0L Auto that had the check engine light come on a while back and sence then it has cleared but the engine during acceleration will still stumble and I have no clue what the problem is.

I have replaced the Throttle Positioning Sensor thinking this was the case.....nope.

I would like to purchase a Code Scanner for the truck but I am fairly new to the scanner world. Can anyone suggest a decient scanner for a decient price? if I have to pay $200, I will but would like to keep below that. a

lso, if anyone can give me some insight on how to use one and the differences in OBD-II & OBD-I and the differences in the EEC-IV I have seen throughout the forum, I'm still confused with all of this.

Thanks!!

Did some research into this awhile ago for my old car. I had (and have I guess) OBD II, so the cheap scanners at Autovalue wouldn't work. There's a couple of companies that sell scanners and programmers. Autoxray was recommended to me. Never did buy one...I may now though. They can be programmed to work with anything it seems. Check em out.

since you have a 96 ranger, you are going to need the obd-II (eec-V) code scanners since they changed over from eev-iv from 94-95.

for some reason i thought i saw a few of the eec-v scanners for prices between like 130-170 bucks but i dont know much about the other scanners (since i have a 94 i have the old system, and those code scanners are like 25 bucks from the auto stores or walmart)
