I have a 1995 4.0L and i went to autozone for them to read my computer to find out why my check engine light came on..
The guy started looking under the hood cause he said the 1995 models had it under there.. well, mine doesn't.
It has it near the hood release and the emergency brake.
well, my questions are..
is it normal for a 95 to have it in that location.
And what is the diference? Is mine under a diferent compliance or diferent computer.?
and what is the cheapest code reader i can get for my ranger.
With the introduction of the OBDII system in 95, the connector moved to where yours is. They are still right there.
If you had a 94 you could get a code reader for $19.95 at Wal-Mart, but a OBDII reader will cost around $200 and you have to order it. Some auto parts places may have them on the shelf, but most dont.
If you have a laptop, check out this review by Brian4.0. He found one that actively monitors the engine. Read the review, it can explain it better than I can. And it's a whole lot cheaper.

My friend told me today that the older Camaro's had a little secret in them.. I'm not sure what models. But you can turn the key in some way like. On OFF On ON oFF or something and they would do a systems check and the interior lights would blink a morse code type thing if something was wrong.
that is freaking cool man

95's should hold the EEC by your left foot and have the test plug up near there on the firewall. Oh wait, I bet it has the data link connector (DLC) under the dash....
Cheapest code reader is prolly the Actron from Autozone. Since you don't have OBD-II on it.....
As for difrerences, nil.

This is awesome.. i recomend anyone interested in this product to get a Fujitsu Stlistic 1000 penbased computer. i think This thing will work with mine. i will definately get this. Thanks so much for the link. This should work perfect on my little stylistic .
BTW. the stylistics are real cheap .. between$30 and $100 on ebay. they cost over $3000 in 1996. came with a 100mhz AMD 50DX2 (fastest 16 bit processor ever made) infared, pen, color monitor output, 3 pcmcia slots (one for the HD) printer port, two com ports, 8mb ram (upgradeable), 4 - 6 hour battery life, run windows 95, can use standard keyboard, and comport mouse .
This is going to be so cool. My friends will freak out when they see me pull this out when they are in my truck.

That's the odd thing.. I do have ODBII ? Its just beside the hood latch under my steering wheel
All 1995 and up Fords had OBDII, some came out in 94 as well. It was a federal law that any vehicle manufactured after January 1, 1996 have it. Almost everyone had implemented it by the 95 models though, as the specs were set several years before that.
That PC interface is neat, I have meant to order one of those for a month now. I think watching what the engine is actually seeing would be great.

That would be cool - my friend has one on his camero - he can change the air to fuel ratios and stuff like that - great for spraying..
