View Full Version : supercharge a 5.0 ranger?
PUrPleSplaSH302 Jul 25 2002, 08:00am Alright guys I need your Info. I used to be a mustang guy and recently purchased a ranger splash. I have a 302 with AFR185cc heads, track heat intake, an autronic tunable ECU, tremec 5 speed, looking to use a vortech T trim, etc. I have a question about supercharger brackets and accessory brackets. If I have 95mustang accessory brackets are they good, others better? And if they are good enough will a 95 vortech bracket work as well? And does anyone have anything against hooker engine mounts, I got a set of new full length hookers for cheap, supposedly they only work with the hooker enginemounts, are they any good? Thanks very much for your Info!! -dave
Ranger50 Jul 25 2002, 09:19am some food for thought on using a vortech bracket. I am using a std fox setup water pump and pulley arrangement on a Lightning 351 (IE: its TALLER).

There is NO way for the stock vortech setup ( charger then underneath that he smog pump, then the alternator) to work in a ranger. :(

tmsoko Jul 25 2002, 02:48pm What year Ranger do you have? If you have a 1998+, use Explorer FEAD and engine mounts. Direct bolt in. The only issue is you would then be limited to Powerdyne Explorer SC.
I am not sure about using mustang FEAD in 1998+. I would recommend against it though, as the short 94-95 FEAD is ~3/4" longer than explorer and explorer is already tight squeeze.
Good luck!
Niestrath Jul 25 2002, 04:46pm I believe you can use the 95 bracket setup if you use a radiator that fits in the radiator bracket and not outside like the heavy duty 4.0 rad a lot of folks are using. Matt Harwood put a 95 S/C Cobra in his FrakenRanger so it must fit. Matt Has done it....
Ranger50 Jul 25 2002, 07:31pm But Matt used a KenneBell super...it mounts like a roots blower would which is on the lower intake...MUCH different. any centrifugal will not mount up the same as a stang will. :(

PUrPleSplaSH302 Jul 25 2002, 09:46pm someone suggested using a bracket for a lightning, what do you think of that? BTW I have a 95 splash, I saw that harwood truck, its alright i guess but i am looking to take it a little further. And those top mount whipple chargers (kennybelle) kinda suck. I think I might just have to try both brackets. thanks guys
the renegade (driver side)bracket might work if you dont mind loosing ac and ps
.the 94-95 stang drivers side ac/ps bracket hits pre 98 steering box.but a spaced out explorer drivers side works for non sc apps
tmsoko Jul 26 2002, 06:54am The Whipple superchargers are arguably the best you can buy. They are the most efficient, add the least heat to the intake charge, and provide the flattest power curves, which leads to excellent off idle power.
If I don't go to a 351W, I will modify a 95 Mustang Kenne Bell blower for the explorer FEAD.
If you can run a Kenne Bell, I would seriously take another look at them.
Matt Harwood Jul 27 2002, 03:42pm I don't know if the KB blower is better or worse than a centrifugal, but it sure worked on my truck. With a bone stock '95 Cobra long block and a set of 30 lb. injectors, it made 319 RWHP with a very mild tune. There was probably 350 RWHP in it. But better than that, it made almost 400 pounds of torque at the rear wheels, and that was what really moved the truck. Like it or not, torque makes a vehicle fast on the street. On a race track where you can wind it out to 6000 RPM, sure, a centrifugal is going to make equal or better power. But how often do you run at 6000 RPM? With the KB blower, I had 8-10 pounds of boost before I could get my foot on the floor at any speed,in any gear--that's pretty nasty power and hard to beat on the street. That truck walked away from some pretty fast cars, and the kid who bought it ran high 12s with it on 255/17 street tires. It wasn't until he swapped to a set of slicks that he broke the driveshaft, but I'd bet it would run low 12s at about 115-117 MPH.
So, don't overlook the KB blowers. They make nasty power, and with the 2200 series, you can run up to 20 pounds of boost, which is more than you'll ever use on the street. They're easier to mount in a truck, too.
PUrPleSplaSH302 Jul 28 2002, 12:49am i used to run mid 12's with a mustang on drag radials, i had 340rwhp and 410rwtq, i am looking for 520-550rwhp and there is no way in hell a whipple can do it. I know i can do it with the combo i am using i just gotta get it to fit. O well thanks guys , dave
Chico Jan 09 2007, 02:01pm I have been working on this little problem for quite some time.... I also am trying to make a T-Trim SN-95 work in a Ranger... 92 Model, Here is a picture I have come up with....

If you dont run the SMOG pump, and eather leave the bracket or cut it off ( I have yet to figure that part out) It should work, and give you more room for the Water Pump and Fan! because it sits back more then the Fox setup.
Note: from what I can see you will never get a Blower belt on it using a 4.0 radator or anything that sits outside of the core support, but you will never cool it eather with a stock type radator:thumbsup:

Very true!
This post shows the modification required for the '87 to '93 brackets to work.
