Hey fellas, First off let me tell you that I love my 3.0 to death, and I can take quite a few s-10's both 4cyl. and 6. BUT the other morning I got my ASS handed to me by a 4.3 s-10. I was pissed off all day long. So I looked around (on the internet and local sales) and found a buddy that has wrecked 88 Mustang. I can get the 5.0 cheap, and it doesn't need a rebuild, its in the car and still runs. They are parting out the car and the odds of them giving me the engine is very very very likely.
I have been thinking about the conversion for a while now, and the s-10 just pushed me over the limit.
So here is my plan...
Build up the 88-5.0, slap a carb set-up on it, and follow it up with a c4 with a nice 2400 (or 2600) stall converter.
PLEASE give me some suggestions on this ..
Thanks

Also, what kits are most of you using, and what happened to the v8 ranger sites (RPS) ???

I am looking to get my truck into the 14's consistantly. I think with just the 302 swap into my truck this is possible. I DO NOT want a heavily modified 5.0, but I also DO NOT want a stock V8. My plans with the engine are pretty much bolt-ons.
-Edelbrock RPM intake manifold
-Edelbrock RPM cam & lifter kit, and timing chain set
-adjustable rods
-Edelbrock carb. (not sure on the cfm yet) help on this please...
-C4 tranny with shift kit
-2400-2600 stall converter
-underdrive pulleys
-rear end swap... 8.8 w/trac lok 4.10 or 3.73gears. Help on this as well please. What did you use and where did they come from?
-MSD 6A ignition system (hopefully, still undecided about this too haha)

This is what I have in my mind so far. I am thinking... if a mustang uses these techniques/mods 13's in the 1/4, I can stay in the 14's with no prob.

What do you guys do about the driveshaft? I noticed you have to shorten it or something????
Thanks again guys

I used L&L mounts and headers. Pricey but worth it. The aod trans is a better tranny than the c4 without question. Fourteens are possible with your suggested combo. you likely will need an l/s rearend to get traction and i used duff long link traction bars and 4 shock rear end setup. Very stiff rearend. I have dynoed mine at 260 rwhp and have not yet timed it in the quarter. I am heavy though at about 3400 lbs. If i can answer any further questions , i would be glad to. V8 rangers rule.

Hey Gary, good to see ya still around the boards! I'm still here, I was talking to you a couple years back about possibly buying your son's project Stang (67 or 68 I think?)... Just curious to see if that car ever got done, it sounded sweet! Right now I'm building a 302 out of an '89 GT that will be swapped into my truck eventually, but for the time being I'm buying an 81 Fairmont wagon as a play-toy. It's stripped out, weighs 2700 lbs and has gone 12.6 in the 1/4 at 110 mph! It should be fun, I'm going to go look at it and pick it up on Sunday! :)

Can anyone tell me what they did to their driveshaft? Where would I take it?

On a side note... the Edelbrock RPM cam is a flat tappet cam, I would be using a roller motor... guess I won't be using that particular one. I believe the roller version is about an E303. Is that about right? Im going back and forth from here and Stangnet.com getting allllll the info about this engine.

Thanks again guys

Dunno about the cam, would have to see the specs. You can use a mustang driveshaft you just need to shorten it, not sure the exact amount. Also check out www.corral.net they also have a ton of info and VERY knowlegdable people.

Righty-o and you should be able to use the existing ranger drive shaft also. As far as length scott was right it depends for each is differnt, My motor might be a half of an inch farther back then your etc, You just want to make sure there is a lil play in it.
