View Full Version : Ranger wiring problem
Boosted Ranger Jul 28 2001, 02:49pm I was planning i using the add pin method for my 88TC motor in 86 ranger swap but i've already hit a wall. The stock ranger injector harness uses different plugs 3 wires vs. 8. What to do. are later 2.3 rangers like 88+ have a different harness?
jababa Jul 28 2001, 08:07pm I did the 88 t coupe to 86 Ranger swap. I'm not following you on the eight wires. Each injector has two wires, a hot and a ground. This would make eight wires. Is this what you are talking about?
If I remember correctly, the harness connectors are the same number of pins for the injectors except the t coupe is a smaller connector. I will check in the morning.
The connectors have three pins. One pin for injector hot, one for ground, and one for the oil pressure sender.
The ground is not a true ground as it goes back to the computer where is is pulsed to ground by timing pulses.
Boosted Ranger Jul 29 2001, 10:21am well i guess the 8 wires arn't all injector there also from the TC motor sensors but either way the the motor harness won't plug into the wiring harness and i can't just swap clips because there's a different number of wires going in into each one. oh and there both female.
Jababa, how did you do your swap did you just swap the entire TC harness or did you work with the ranger one?
jababa Jul 29 2001, 10:57am I used the existing harness in the Ranger. The t bird harness appeared to be a two piece harness. Also, the connectors going to the firewall were different.
I re-pinned the computer, and added wires for the maf, and boost control. I think I had to change the connector going to the tps as the t bird connector was smaller.
I checked the wiring on my set-up. I don't find anything with eight wires. The injector wiring is 4 wire as is the connector from the firewall harness.
Maybe I'm still not understanding what you are referring to.
Boosted Ranger Jul 30 2001, 10:51pm OK, on the back of the intake side of the Turbo Coupe motor next to the fuel rail there are two connectors that go to the injectors and other sensors (temp, knock, etc.) one is black 8 female pin holes the other is small gray and has 4 holes. ( I looked at another TC and it's the same so you must have this) Then on the stock ranger wiring harness the connectors that would go here on the stock motor are a big one with 4 female holes (one is unused) and small one with 2 holes. So the pins are different and there both female...my stock ranger harness will not mate with the TC motor harness.
If noone else has had this problem with an 86 is my harness different maybe a leftover with 85 wiring, or yours is an early 87, but i though all these years were the same and 88 they changed? stock the IAC was srewed onto the air cleaner box...did you have this?
The Rascal King Jul 31 2001, 06:58am This may or may not apply, since I just made the complete 88 TC harness work in my 83 (no existing harness), but I can tell you what those plugs are for, and you can compare that with the Ranger wires to see where they should go. The black plug is important - those are the injector and ACT wires. The only wire I used out of the gray plug was the yellow/red, which is the knock sensor, and I only added that one in for a margin of safety while I'm getting everything else together. The other wires in the gray plug are gauge wires...which you may need if you're running the stock Ranger dash. Since I'm not, I just ran new wires from the senders to the gauges.
Hope this helps in some small way...
Boosted Ranger Jul 31 2001, 09:06pm Thanks rascal, I've figured out part of my problem, the TC runs all the wires from the motor into the 2 plugs, while the ranger just has a seperate plug to each sensor and injectors. Will the stock ranger injector harness on the TC motor work then i already have the temp sensors plugs on the ranger harness, i guess id just have to add the knock sensor, right?
And what about the EGT it's not the same one.
The Rascal King Aug 01 2001, 06:54am The Ranger injector harness should work fine on the TC engine, but look and make sure the wires make sense. The 88 turbo engine used batch fire injection strategy, meaning the 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 injectors fire together and therefore share a ground wire. I'm not sure about the 86 Ranger...it may have fired 1 & 3 and 2 & 4 together so that those would share grounds. It should be a negligible difference, but I just thought I'd mention it. As for the ACT and knock sensor wires, you could either put them both in another connector and run them to the computer, or just run them direct...
Boosted Ranger Aug 04 2001, 09:26am I checked the diagram and your right about the injectors, so if i use the ranger injector harness should i just switch the individual clips to make it right. What if i use the TC harness is it already correct in the harness or determined earlier in the wiring.
my battery in on the passenger side , where did everyone fit the VAM
