I read somewhere, maybe here, that installing a turbo engine and retaining the A/C is impossible. I want to do this to my '90 but I am really, really partial to my A/C. Can anybody help?

Do you have a particular vendor in mind for the cowl-induction hood. Some that I have seen look like crap and really need a lot of work to look good. JBRanger Aug 01 2001, 05:42am Will the manifold just flip around like that? I had heard that you have to redrill if you did that. Hmm, time to experiment. I'm working on the design for turbo header right now. I'm gonna have the guys up the street weld it up for me. They do really good work as is evident because J.R. Granatelli uses them for his Pro 5.0 car.  :) The Rascal King Aug 01 2001, 07:05am Originally posted by redlongbed I read somewhere, maybe here, that installing a turbo engine and retaining the A/C is impossible. Anything is possible...but keeping A/C is going to be a lot more work. :) As soon as I can get my pictures scanned you can see what you're up against as far as space concerns...The picture I'll attach shows it, but without the (modified) heater box. Where in East Tennessee? I'm between Nashville and Clarksville... The Rascal King Aug 01 2001, 07:12am Originally posted by JBRanger Will the manifold just flip around like that? But you can see why I mentioned the coil packs... JBRanger Aug 01 2001, 09:29am I see what you mean. I've got a couple of crazy ideas. Um, my craziest idea would be put on electric fans and mount the turbo in front of the motor. Don't know how feasible this would be. Another idea is putting it lower than the factory turbo mounting. Any ideas on flipping th manifold and putting the coil packs in a different place? Thanks. I'll draw up soething this weekend on CAD and post it up.   :) JBRanger Aug 01 2001, 09:31am In the first picture there is no i/c. Would this be possible in GA with the heat? LOL Thanks again. redlongbed Aug 01 2001, 10:26am Originally posted by The Rascal King Anything is possible...but keeping A/C is going to be a lot more work. :) As soon as I can get my pictures scanned you can see what you're up against as far as space concerns...The picture I'll attach shows it, but without the (modified) heater box. You can run non-intercooled anywhere, but it's going to limit boost by increasing the likelihood of detonation. That picture is of my mockup turbo and exhaust manifold, it has an intercooler on it now. Again, pictures to come. As far as flipping the manifold goes, if you look at the picture you'll notice that you may also have to relocate the alternator as well. You wouldn't be the first to put the turbo in front of the motor...I'll see if I can't dig those pics up too. Originally posted by redlongbed Great pic of the flipped setup. What kind of car is that? It's a 1966 Datsun convertible. You can see more pictures at http://www.PictureTrail.com/karlepayne |
