View Full Version : Polished wheels, what to use?? Ranger911 Aug 11 2001, 08:54am Hey guys, got a quick question for yall. What's the best product to clean Polished wheels? I want to remove the brake dust and keep it shiny!! Thanks!! Andy eliktronix Aug 11 2001, 01:46pm Two things i use are, Mothers mag and aluminum polish and Blue Magic metal polish. You can get them at any auto parts shop. I did a side-by-side comparison and i could not tell the different between the two and it made the wheels look great. Once you polish them up, it's easy to wipe them down once a day with a micro-fiber cloth or a really soft cotton cloth from the autoparts store. This method has worked for me, I hope this helps. Ranger911 Aug 11 2001, 04:36pm Thank you for the reply, I will go get some tomorrw!! Andy P.S. Anyone else gives thumb up to those 2 products? :) Roadrunner Aug 11 2001, 07:48pm Well are you talking aboput claening or polishing? If you mean cleaning I just use soapy water from when I wash my car. I believe those spary on cleaners are junk, I have only found a few that really cut brake dust. For polishing I use Eagle one never dull or wenol. I also like mothers mag and aluminum cleaner. I don't know anything about blue magic, i need to try it out one day. Ranger911 Aug 11 2001, 08:23pm Hehe, I guess both cleaning and polishing...I haven't got my rims on yet, so I am gonna try get the brake dust off first *bought it used* So, to clean the rims, use soapy water, eh? Won't that hurt the polished wheels? I think I am gonna try it tomorrow morning... Andy Roadrunner Aug 11 2001, 09:04pm I use soapy car wash water. If i is safew on paint it will be fine on your wheels. Just be careful what You use to wash them with. If you use a sponge make sure you check that there is no dirt in it. Cleaning wheels s just like paint, be as careful as you can. And when using an unfamiliar prouct test it on a small spot to see if you will like the results. By the way, what type of wheels are you getting? eliktronix Aug 11 2001, 09:28pm I also use a sponge and soapy water to clean first, then use the polish. Ranger911 Aug 12 2001, 12:53am Heh, thanks to someone in Ranger Forum, I finally got the wheels I wanted for a reasonable price. Here is a pic of it, hope I can get them mounted soon!! Thanks again! Andy Yep, I'll second that! I've known Doug for a little over a year and he's definitely a good guy! I didn't know he was selling those wheels, those looked great on his white Splash and I'm sure they'll be tight on your truck as well! As for the original post, I have to give a thumbs up to Mother's Mag and AL Polish... I use the stuff all the time on all kinds of metal, and it's never steered me wrong! I used it with a buuffing wheel in my power drill this past weekend to polish up the wheels on the wagon and it worked great! As far as cleaning brake dust, etc. off of the wheels, try some stuff called "Westley's Bleche-White." It's great stuff! I use it almost every time I wash the truck, you just spray it on the tires (it's made for rubber and cuts brake dust on wheels too) when they're dry, then scrub them clean with a wet sponge, rinse the tires/wheels off and continue to clean the rest of the vehicle. It gets all the brown residue that some cleaners leave behind and leaves a fresh clean rubber surface just waiting for some new tire shine! Ranger911 Aug 13 2001, 04:14pm hehe, I didn't know he was selling those tires too until one day I decided to find some Eagle 212s on Ebay...and bam! there it was!! I was gonna email him, and I noticed his email address was so familiar!! So I hunt him down like a dog saw a piece of juicy meat!!  I gotta thank him again for selling me those rims, it made my dream come true, now I just have to find a way to get those puppies mounted!! Andy tucknrnager Sep 01 2001, 11:11pm i use mothers aluminum polish, i also wash my truck 1-2 times a week and really blast the rims with the pressure washer and dry them with a towel before i leave ( so the water wont leave water spots on them) i try to polish them once a month, i went 8 months before i first did it and they felt like sand paper and took me 5 days to totally polish them. the more often you do it, the easier it will be each time, just did the drivers side tonight and got both done in 2 hours, they have alot of nooks and crannies and curves. gonna do the other side tomorrow, hope this helped some if u want to see a pic of my rims all snazzied up, go to snapshots and click on my thread entitiled " linkto all my pics on street source mag. 99 Supercab Sep 14 2001, 07:19am If you really want to clean/polish them up,use a 4" grinder with a buffing pad and some jewelers rogue. I only do this about once every 3 months, but it keeps mine looking about as shiney as chrome wheels. As for weekly cleaning,I use either Wenol or some stuff called Extreme Wheel cleaner. Its very similar to Never Dull, but does a better job IMO 01BlueEdge Sep 18 2001, 09:21pm use windex or other window cleaner for chrome wheels |
