I have a 2002 ranger with the 2.3 4 cylinder. This truck had these two hollow canisters inline with the airflow to the intake. I found out that they were nothing but airtraps, if you take them off and cap the holes or replace the pipe all together it will increase horse power. Another thing I have done to it is cut holes in the filter casing under the filter. Add to that the stage three super chip, and the k&n air filter I have a four banger that will hang with 4.6 liter v8's.

I'll move this to the 4 banger board before someone picks you apart on the 4.6 comparison. :)

hmmm hang with the 4.6's eh???...I doubt that...The duratec is a good motor but removing air mufflers is not gunna add horsepower...just recover lost horsepower...Ohh thats gunna make 4.6Ls really scared when they hear u have a K&N Filter...lol

Too bad you don't live a bit closer I'd like to see what you can do. I haven't met a modified duratec ranger on the roads yet. Only one bone stock and I wanted to race so bad I almost stalled but in the end chalk up one for me.

I own and drive what is possibly the most highly modified Duratec 2.3 on the boards and probably in the nation. I have done some street racing with it and believe me it will not hang anywhere near a 4.6l equiped vehicle even if it is a 4wd f150 supercrew... It doesnt have that much power... So please spare us that... and be realistic about it... I know it is fun to think that but it really gives us 4 banger guys a bad rap...

If you check my website you can see all the mods that have been done to it so far as well as some dyno graphs of the progress made. Perhaps with a stout enough turbo system, I would hang with the 4.6s but Im no where near that. If you really have a desire to get mroe power out of that engine you should check out Duratec Performance... all of their mods offered are on my truck and I have noticed quite a bit of difference in power.

Sorry to be a bit rude about that but it was gonna happen sometime...:(

BTW...... welcome to RPS!:rpsrocks:

I dont think hes lying. I have a supercab 02 3.0L. Mods in sig (not many). I run with my friends 4.6L supercab 4.6L f150. My friend Jared (RedRanger01) has a 2.5L that will run with it too. We actually can pull a head of it. I remember leaving highschool (thank god thats over with) last year we'd race up the hill leaving school and we could pass him sometimes. If his truck is a regular cab I can believe him.

You guys might be able to hang with a 4.6 F-150, but get next to a crown-vic or a mustang and try it. I have an intake, exhaust and "cut holes in the box" and I cant even hang with a 4.2 v-6 f-150 much less a 4.6 v-8. But ****, If you do let me in on your mods. You gotta 2.3T?

Wow. I am a big fan of Rangers and especially the new 2.3's power, but the (awesome) 4.6 is no match for any n/a 2.3 ranger-The 4.6 is simply an incredible motor IMO (I think 99% of the law enforcement in the US thinks so too- {crown vic?}).
Yet, it does feel good to believe that other nonsense for a little bit, doesn't it? :E

Sorry dude, I drive my grandpa's 95/96 crown vic and umm yeah/// For a boat those cars HAUL!

I got this piece of info from http://www.nctd.com/review-walk.cfm?ReviewID=105

Here is the key point --->

"Our Crown Victoria LX test car came with the dual-exhaust 210-hp 4.6-liter V8, providing 20 more horsepower than the standard single-exhaust version of the same V8. This is considerably less than the Buick Roadmaster's 260-hp 5.7-liter V8, although equal to the base 200-hp 4.3-liter V8 on the Caprice. (You can option the Caprice up to the 5.7-liter V8, however.) "

I will bet your truck has what?? 120 hp.....

Sorry man, but facts are facts!

Sorry man, but I have a moded 2.5L and there is no way I can hang with a 240HP 4.6. Even though your truck is lighter the power of the 4.6 is too much, even if it is in a Ext. cab. auto.

Well, RedRanger01 has a 00 2.5L reg. cab 5 speed. 3.73, modded airbox, exhaust, and a ported upper intake. And he beat a 00 4.6L supercab auto F150. I have beaten the same truck. My truck and mods are in the sig. I know that I cannot beat a crown vic. And I am not saying that we beat the f150 by much, but we did pull ahead of him. Hell my 3.8L V6 auto Firebird with a flowmaster on it beat the same kids other car. Its a 96 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC (32 valve 4.6L). I stomped him pretty easily (then I got pulled over for 75 in a 45, just got a warning since he knew me though). Anyway, you get my point. It is possible.

Posting the sig would have helped.

Ok Rangerkid, I know you have your "facts", but here is my EXPERIENCE. I drive an (unmarked) 2003 Crown Vic Police Interceptor. Let's say that I have spent many hours in the "heavy chevy", aka the caprice with the 5.7. Talk about a true boat.

I am not saying that the crown vic is the fastest car known to man, and that the 4.6 is the powerplant for the new millenium. All I am saying is that most fords with a 4.6 would take any n/a 2.3 4 cyl (yes even a ranger) to the Freakin cleaners.

Not trying to throw sand in your face, but they area not all like old gramp's car.

My girlfriend's dad has a 97' 4.6 supcab 150 auto and that thing is a dog. IMO a duratec 2.3 ina reg cab with a stick and decent gears would be able to beat it. But, keep in mind they have increased the hp of the 4.6 since 97.

One more thing guy's, half of these "smoked them" stories I don't believe. Did they know you were racing them, I mean come on, you didn't win if they were just cruisin! Plus yes, crown vics are fast like I stated in my above post :) -TheRangerKid:pimp:

Interesting comment about the 2.3 hanging with a 4.6. But let's be realistic, the F150s weighin at about a 1000 lbs more than the ranger.
My friend drives a semi for a living and his truck has as incredibly powerful Cummins diesel and I have no doubt that if he would race me Bob tailed I would kick his butt......but that proves nothing.:drunk:
