View Full Version : Surface prep/paint help needed..
Jarrett Aug 13 2001, 07:43pm Ok this isn't really a body question but a general metal prep question. When you grind something how do you smooth it out afterwards so that the metal is smooth for painting. You know how you grind metal and then paint it you can see the grinding marks? Is there a finer grinding wheel I need to use? (see pic below)
Mike R. Aug 13 2001, 07:47pm just go over it with some 110 or 220 & put a couple coats of a primer or sealer over it.
Jarrett Aug 13 2001, 07:50pm Thanks Kwikness, that was....well umm......kwik. ;) :E
Mike R. Aug 13 2001, 09:22pm hehe no prob man:)
they do have 50 grit discs for grinders also. it leaves a better "pattern" to the grit & doesn't goudge it as bad as say like a 34 grit does.
ChrisC97 Aug 13 2001, 09:32pm Also before you primer it, you shoudl wash it with this metal cleaner stuff. Ill get you the specfic name tomorrow cause its dark out.
Jarrett Aug 13 2001, 09:37pm  Thanks Kwik & Chris.
Mike R. Aug 13 2001, 09:45pm right, you are correct.. are you talking about using a metal "acid" wash that etches the metal to make the paint grip to it better? you could use that, but you could also use a metal etching primer just as easy..
generally the only time you use an acid wash is when you have a smooth bare metal panel (like a roll pan) & need to clean it & give some gril for the primer/ sealer to hold on too. not to say you can't/shouldn't use that, just my advice:)
you can use some hot soapy water to clean it off with too. just make sure you dry it & blow it off real well & get some paint on it real soon so the metal doesn't flash
but since there is quite a bit of grit on there for the primer/sealer to grip to, acid washing it isn't really necessary...
ChrisC97 Aug 13 2001, 09:47pm Welp that just about wraps everything up! Hehe, you know alot about that stuff kwik im impressed.
Mike R. Aug 13 2001, 09:49pm hehe:) thanks man..

thanks for letting me know!
ScottBW Aug 14 2001, 05:41pm Is that a customers car you painted? Looks sweet, we just picked up a 1960 chevy 4 door belair for 600 bucks, engine looks brand new, and we pretty much just need to repaint it, and fix the floorboards before we sell it, but we will make a pretty penny off this one, =D im gonna spray it the original turqoise with a white top.
Mike R. Aug 14 2001, 06:04pm yea, we did that for my partners brother in law. it was a really solid car! that car is the Brookwood edition. it had a few more of the "luxury" items of that day.
we only had about 4 patches to put in it, all less than 2"x2". it had a lot of dings in it. we worked on that car for close to a year before it ever saw the paint booth.
that car is one of my favorites i've done so far. it had the original..... is it 289(???) engine with like 50K on it. he had 15x8 chevy ralleys on all 4 corners. he also had a custom dual exhaust put on it too.
that thing was bad ass.... i miss it:bawl: heheheh
