View Full Version : waxing the mirage paint
TX Ranger Aug 14 2001, 01:05pm I did some of my interior stuff in the Duplicolor Mirage stuff, which I think is a laquer paint. I have already compounded it, since I wet-sanded it to get it nice and smooth looking. It's been maybe 1 -2 weeks since I painted it, and I was wondering if it was safe to wax yet...anyone know??
ChrisC97 Aug 14 2001, 01:50pm I would think so, thats a good amount of time for it to cure.
Mike R. Aug 14 2001, 03:34pm yea, go ahead. it'll be OK:)
pure addiction Aug 20 2001, 08:39pm how does the duplicolor mirage paint look. i have been thinking aboutpainting my interior with that paint also, but i heard it is dark and hard to see the color chabges in it
TX Ranger Aug 20 2001, 08:55pm i don't know who told you that, mine looks nice, and is easy to see the color-change on...I did all of the black plastic in my interior in it, when the sun hits it right, you can see like 4 colors...I got the green-purple stuff...Mine worked great, but a kid I know did his stuff in the gold-magenta stuff and his looks like ass..but I'm sure it's just because he has no clue how to paint and I had a friend that's gonna be a painter do mine...i say go for it...i'll have pics of mine in a week or so...
gopher_6_9 Aug 23 2001, 09:00pm Where did you get the paint and how much was it? The local parts stores claim they caint get it........
pure addiction Aug 23 2001, 09:05pm i'm getting mine from a local auto body supply store. anybody that deals with duplicolor paint should be able to get it for you. call some your your local body shops
TX Ranger Aug 23 2001, 09:09pm i got mine from O'reilly, but anyone that sells Dupli Color should be able to get it. They even have it at K mart here..
BluRanger8 Aug 24 2001, 10:17pm I painted some flames on my brothers Mustang with the stuff. It came out well considering it came from a rattle can. The pic is not the best. It was taken at night with the color change reacting to the camera flash. It looks better in daylight. Anyway here it is...
gopher_6_9 Aug 25 2001, 02:37pm Hmmmm, kinda make me wonder if I should paint on my racing stripes...........
BluRanger8 Aug 25 2001, 06:39pm I wouldn't advise it. This was just a cheap alternative. If I had it to do again, I would have sprung the $300 for a quart of DuPont Chromalusion. I know its very expensive, but if that's the look you're going for, get the good stuff. The Mirage is great for small things like interior pieces and such but really isn't meant to be applied as an automotive exterior finish, especially since it is lacquer based.
Purpetrator Aug 27 2001, 12:30pm I'm currently painting interior pieces using the purple-green Mirage paint. Believe it or not, my local Kmart sells it for like $17 for the kit. I was told that the color change isn't real evident but I painted my defroster vents and the console so far and it clearly changes from a dark green to a blue to purple. I put like 6 coats of the paint on. (they say 3-6 and the more you put on the better the change) If you take your time and don't put too thick of coats on, it looks good on interior. Wouldn't try it on outside though. I'd spend a little more for the Chromalusion like BluRanger said.
RoushRanger18 Aug 30 2001, 08:24am I painted my interior peices with it..3 basecoats..5 color coats, and 3 clear coats...lol..the color change really shows up, I like it....I think i am gonna go wax it right now...hmm..wax on..whack off..isnt that right? hahahahah. riiiight. bye.

Good point, but the only reason I was even thinking about it is that I plan on a new paintjob in a year anyway (thinking about PPG Viper Silver Monotone with Black racingstripes and sprayin bedliner....)

Well in that case, go for it!
pure addiction Sep 01 2001, 06:25pm i just got done sprayin my interior pieces with the green/purple. the only problem i had with it was when i painted the black trim around the radio.....heat/ac...etc. the paint base paint bubbled and now it looks like ass. it only happened on that peice everything else looks good. how do i go about repainting the surround and do it without getting the bubbles
stRanger Sep 01 2001, 07:32pm mayb resand the area and clean it up real good and b sure the surface/surrounding air isn't too hot cause that can sometimes cause it to bubble i think.... then just repaint
later
Dragginbalz Sep 02 2001, 08:01am just a correction. the dupont chromaillusion is $300 for a pint!
they don't sell it in quarts unfortunately!
