View Full Version : Can I put a sun roof in my x-cab?
Ranger_Rebel Aug 14 2001, 03:43pm I would like to put a sun roof in my 97 ext. cab. Where would I move the dome light too and my headliner is molded sort of (has the little dip in the dip middle), so how does that look with a sun roof? also if any has a pic of a sun roof I would appreciate it.
Thx.

This is what i can tell you from my experience...
I went to a nearby mod shop. They said they move the Dome light to the backside of the Sunroof.
As far as the dip, they make a special insert that basically molds around the sunroof. Kinda like a ring around it and it molds the headliner into the sunroof
I was quoted $300, and its a Farmont model. :E

Were you quoted 300 for the whole thing with installation or just installation. Also is that just a sunroof that pops open or is it a moon roof which opens completely so you could stand through it. The cheapest I've seen just the parts for a moon roof is like 500 bucks. I was just wondering what you would be getting for 300 bucks.
Ranger_Rebel Aug 14 2001, 06:08pm Is the moon roof what Splash has on his truck, where it slides back?
Detonate69 Aug 14 2001, 07:19pm well the moon roof is where the whole glass piece slides back and is completely open. I'm not sure what splash has on his truck I haven't seen it.
Goldie Aug 14 2001, 07:25pm I believe it was $300 for all...
Yes, it was the one that slides back onto the roof.
You can check it out Here (http://www.skylitesunroofs.com/p_spoiler_sunroof.html)
Its the Farmont model, i believe either the 910 or 1000 models fit the ext cab.
But be warned, 99Supercab told me that Farmont leaks, and hence i didnt buy it :E
O-Ranger Aug 15 2001, 10:04am How the heck did I miss this post for so long? Geeeezz, the Geritol ain't kicking in like it used to.
Sunroofs/Moonroofs/etc - If you have an x-cab you can do an electric OEM for about $1K - they'll re-do the headliner and move the light. Only problem is, it eats headroom - if you are over 6 ft, go to plan B. Plan B for tall folks and regular cabs is an electric "spoiler" that slides outside (same $). I've had both and both work well. As far as leaks go - all inside units are designed to leak, but under control. If you are getting water where you don't want it, your drain tubes need to be cleaned out.

Happy Rangering!
Ranger_Rebel Aug 15 2001, 11:33am I don't think I have to worry about rain because it never rains up here!!!:bawl: :cussing:
O-Ranger if you have a pic of your sun roof could you post it for me? THx.
O-Ranger Aug 15 2001, 02:10pm Mash that little button down below that says WWW with a picture of a house. If you need more detailed pics, let me know.
Yea, splash has the spoiler type, is electric and was done for around 1k CDN.
beansed Aug 11 2002, 02:40am Okay., yes all roofs, either manual or electric leak eventually.
farmont is a common OEM., but serval of the Sunroof chain companies will warrant their roofs for life, so when you have a problem they will fix it.
The only power roof you can really use in a PU is an over the roof Spoiler sunroof due to the amount of roof. (means no pocket sunroofs)
I have installed a few roofs., so i prefer a molded one pies plastic.
The reason is that its lighter and won't warp your roof. (yes you may need roof stiffeners)
Last and most important. Silicon sealant tends to stay better with the plastic versus the metal ones.
for my Ranger, I am considering a manual one so i can get a larger roof without robbing the headroom. Any favotires are welcome for help.
I plan to Mig-weld stiffners into the roof with my mig., just because I can.
