View Full Version : Solid mounts-good or bad moeysmazda Jan 26 2003, 06:16pm I have a 94 ranger and its body dropped 3.5 inches so I am trying to get the engine as low as I can. Does anyone know the dissadvantages or advantages of solid motormounts? Im in a delima! Thanks!!! cobrassc Jan 26 2003, 08:54pm The rubber mounts are more for a daily driver so that you wont feel the motor vibrating while solid mounts are aimed towards racing. I run solid mounts on my Cobra, but it doesn't have a large cam in it...yet. Once I get everything ironed out with my Ranger, I'm thinking about getting some solid mounts made. I always keep a rubber tranny mount with solid motor mounts though. Niestrath Jan 27 2003, 08:38am Cobrassc is correct the solid mounts are generally stronger but transfer a lot engine and power train vibrations. If you are going all out then solid may be the way to go but if you are going to use it as a daily driver then may be not. BrianB31 Jan 27 2003, 11:18am My truck is a daily driver and I have rubber isolater mounts. I saw a no no on Horsepower Tv yesterday. They upgraded their tranny and replaced the old rubber mount with one of those fancy energy suspension mounts. You can't do that. If you switch the trans mount to those higher performance materials you have to change your engine mounts as well or it'll rip them up because they are tuned as a set. Vise versa on the trans mount if you change the engine mounts. Ranger306 Jan 27 2003, 10:54pm Brain, Yeah I saw that too.. it was on that Yellow Chevelle Vert. Right? when they put the B&M Converter and Shift kit in it.. Yeah I'll always thought if you went to a Solid Motor mount you had to go to a solid Tranny mount vise versa.. or can you go with a solid Motor mount and stock type Tranny mount? cobrassc Jan 28 2003, 12:18am I don't use a solid tranny mount because the chassis will flex more at the motor than at the tranny so if you keep a rubber tranny mount, it gives it an area for the twisting to occur. Just my .02 #1 Lone Ranger Jan 28 2003, 08:07pm I'm using the Kaufmann poly mounts, with my original OLD 200,000 mile trans mount. I have 37,000 HARD miles with a bunch of 1/4 mile runs, with no problems yet. But im ordering the complete Energy Suspension urathane kit, and will change it then. BTW im buying a 8.8 tracloc with 3.55 gears for $350 this weekend. WOO HOO no more peg leg!! moeysmazda Jan 29 2003, 08:48pm Thanks for the help!!!!!!! One more question- you guys with solid mounts, did you buy monts or just fabbed your own? Thanks! quadzjr Feb 27 2003, 10:37am I have the same question as moneysmazda but if you did purchase them from where? the solid mounts. I mean. STeven 410Fortune Jan 07 2005, 03:38pm AutoFAB makes a real nice urethane tranny mount for your Ford, will work well with solid engine mounts :) I will be running the L&L mounts with my 5.0L and the Autofab tranny mount I got last year.......my 4x4 kept ripping up stock ford trans mounts..... Kevin Jan 07 2005, 03:42pm (PSST - you are replying to a post that was made on 02-27-2003 at 10:37 AM} 410Fortune Jan 07 2005, 04:40pm it may be old but I was looking at it now because I am in the middle of the 5.0L conversion, so even though its old its still in the FAQ and is usefull so I figured I would add more usefull info. Kevin Jan 07 2005, 05:55pm Just having a little fun man. I think it's great that someone can make use of these old posts...glad we're able to hold on to them. Kevin 410Fortune May 11 2005, 10:09am To add even more likely useless info I now have the truck driving, 300ft lbs of torque in a BII = fun I am using the L&l solid mounts and a modified AutoFab urethane trans mount. I can feel the vibrations from the engine, more so at certain RPM's then others, but in no way is it uncomfortable, this truck is my DD. I notice that if I keep my hand ont he shifter (no need mines an auto) I can feel them much more, but its really not that bad. My 5.0L runs very smooth however (stock cam) |
