Has anyone looked into a turbo'ed Duratec? I may run to Turbo Specialties to ask about a turbo setup for the Ranger tomorrow. I am thinking of a 5.0L Explorer drivetrain, but my truck is an 03, and I heard that you cannot have a motor that is older than your truck. They dont have inspections here in Alabama, but I am afraid that may change. I think a turbo would be just as sweet. I read that during its development, the Duratec held 20lbs of boost with out a problem. So I am guessing that maybe 8-12lbs would be ok for a daily driver. With 12lbs, would I need an intercooler?

Sorry for all the questions,
Joey

Sometimes people don't say anything because they don't have anything to say ;)

I haven't done any real research on it, but from what I do know the Duratec has some really strong potential. It should be able to handle ~10 psi of boost without changing the compression ratio, and if the head flows as well as I've been led to believe, it should be fairly impressive at those levels.

An intercooler is never a bad idea, but assuming you match the turbo fairly well to the airflow requirements, you shouldn't need one at those boost levels.

I think most folks are waiting for the Duratec to show up in the Focus and let someone else do the expensive destructive testing to get a system together that works well. But if you're up to blazing the trail, I say best of luck to you!

Where in Alabama?

funny that you should mention this, I was thinking about this the other day....the idea I had is the Mazda 6 MPS (or whatever is was called) also has the duratec 2.3, but a much different tranny. But it comes in a turbo version, and that puts out the "theoretical" japanese limit of 276 hp. take the parts off the mazda that makes it fast, put them on a duratec ranger....the only problem I could see is that the mazda uses gasoline direct injection, which neither the ranger nor the current u.s. model mazda 6 has......but there is always a way around things...can you imagine a 270hp 4 cylinder duratec ranger? that would be a blast to drive....

I cant verifiy the boost numbers you speak of but here is what I know. This engine to be a good reciever for a turbo setup needs 2 things really. #1 is forged connecting rods, the stock sintered ones are not going to take well to boost. The second is forged low compression pistons (9.7:1 stock to 8.5-8:1) as the hypereutic ones are also not to happy with boost. The crank is very stock really just needs to be polished and a Mazda 6 drag team is running 70lbs of boost on a stock block so the block is no issue. Hope this helps in giving you an idea of what its gonna take to turbo this baby! I cant wait till mine gets that knid of treatment!

I didnt mean it like nobody wants to help me, I just meant that I posted it on this board because it gets more traffic. Also I live in Birmingham, actually a town called Hoover about 20 minutes south of it.

Thanks for all the replies,
Joey

I was thinking this. Why would someone want to buy a brand new truck and then hack it up?

I lived in Hoover for about a year, and still have family there. Actually going to be down there next weekend helping some of them move...

because we are car nuts, and everyone knows that car nuts can't leave anything stock....there is always room for bigger, better, faster, louder.......it's an addiction :nixweiss:
