View Full Version : moving stock gas tank inside bed outofrange Apr 07 2003, 03:42pm Not sure if this is the right place to post this but what's all involved in moving the tank to the bed? Thanks nusensesd Apr 07 2003, 04:53pm you have a standard cab right? if you don't then you ain't going to be able to get the x-cab tank in there sideways.. basically to put in the bed you just have to lengthen the hoses and the wiring.. Thats about it.. Hole-Shot Apr 07 2003, 06:27pm Yup! I done it - Depends if you have a regular cab or an extended cab. You can pretty much only do it with a regular cab and have it look alright. I got pics if you want them. outofrange Apr 08 2003, 07:08pm yeah i have a reg. cab. hey Hole-Shot that would be great if you got pics. thanks Hole-Shot Apr 08 2003, 08:48pm got it out of the truck: http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid59/p9c9aae3bdf616415f92fb968aeda3854/fc5f36d3.jpg marked the hoses with tape and numbered them #1, #2, and #3 and did the same for the nozzles on the tank: http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid57/p36e849d228b45df7a6579b83a0648fc6/fc6c6327.jpg extended the fuel lines/wires using barbed fittings and a trailer wiring harness. Saved the tubing connectors for the stock fuel pump and reused them: http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid57/pab7cebe7a824ca45a4981b251015a4b8/fc6c6325.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid57/pfe593860527263db6657d97fad413ade/fc6c6322.jpg put the tank in the bed. I used regular carbed hose: http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid56/p5d53c6365c08806eea3ed1bda579a2b3/fc71fea4.jpg gopher_6_9 Apr 08 2003, 09:01pm So you just used the standard hose from the parts store? Where did you get the fittings? outofrange Apr 08 2003, 10:55pm hey good pics, now i have to get up the nerve to do it myself. how much did it cost , can't be much? where do you find the fittings? thanks nusensesd Apr 09 2003, 02:08am Originally posted by gopher_6_9 So you just used the standard hose from the parts store? Where did you get the fittings? don't use standard hose.. make sure the hose you buy is specifically designed for fuel lines.. Roadrunner Apr 09 2003, 03:26am This ones going in the archive when you all get done. Alert me next time so I can hold on to good info like this for future reference. Hole-Shot Apr 09 2003, 05:45am I had to buy: -12 feet of 5/16" ID reinforced Carb Hose. It's for carbed engines because EFI hose was way too expensive; -(3) 1/4" barbed to 3/8" NPT male (pipe thread) fittings, -(2) 3/8" barbed to 3/8" NPT female fittings, -(1) 1/4" barbed to 3/8" NPT female fitting, -(1) four-wire trailer wiring harness with connectors, -and a bunch of tubing clamps. The 1/4" barbed ends were for the plastic, stock EFI lines. Those connectors were connected to the 3/8" barbs and used for the 5/16" fuel lines. The other 1/4" barbed fitting was for the air line - I had some extra 1/4" layin' around to use for that. Each fitting was $1.50 to $2.75 a piece. The trailer wiring harness was about $6, I think. The old, stock wires were soldered to the new trailer wiring harness wires and then heatshrink tubing was used. At the other end of the harness, the stock connector to the fuel pump was again used. outofrange Apr 09 2003, 01:56pm thanks for info, that helped alot. HammyDog Apr 09 2003, 06:22pm Can you do the same with an extended cab and tank ? BlueWraith Apr 09 2003, 06:50pm Okay.. so why did you buy a trailer harness isntead of just using 18g or whatever size required wire? Just to be able to take it apart easily? gopher_6_9 Apr 09 2003, 06:57pm Originally posted by HammyDog Can you do the same with an extended cab and tank ? Only if you sit it parelallel to the bed sides. Hole-Shot Apr 09 2003, 07:55pm Originally posted by BlueWraith Okay.. so why did you buy a trailer harness isntead of just using 18g or whatever size required wire? Just to be able to take it apart easily? If you have to take the bed off again, after relocating the gas tank, it'd be a real biz0tch to cut a huge, un-sightly hole for the connector and all them hoses to slide back through. Therefore, the wires and hoses meet only half-way - all I gotta do, to take the bed off, is disconnect the wiring harness for the tank and the hoses at the bed and it's a piece of cake. dropped932.3 Apr 28 2003, 08:08pm Will a setup like this pass inspection? Hole-Shot Apr 30 2003, 10:31am Originally posted by dropped932.3 Will a setup like this pass inspection? Unknown, but not likely. Hole-Shot May 18 2003, 10:15am It's been about a month bagged, just a little update on my gas tank situation: It's been working perfectly without any problems for all this time, so far. The carb hose (not fuel injection hose) has held-up decently since I've installed it. The fittings don't leak, as far as I know; I've checked for wetness and/or residue and have found none on and around the barbed fittings. From time to time I do smell gasoline pretty strongly. I go out in back and check, but smell nothing but exhaust fumes under the tonneau cover. TX Ranger Nov 19 2003, 01:06pm asdf |
