Well, the back story is pretty easy, I bought a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT reg cab, flareside, of its ORIGINAL owner last November, Drove it through winter, then sold it to a close friend... Friend Enlisted before he finished paying it off, and the transmission started to let go, so I bought it back off of him *Obviously at this stage, From him paying me, and the original purchase price, I probably only had $500 into buying this truck...

I also have a few other cars/trucks, but more importantly I had a 98 ranger, with a slipping transmission taking up space in my drive way, that isn't really worth **** with the trans grasping at straws, so I decided to do the only rational thing... And Swap it :rotfl:

Here's my girl: *Pardon the frost on the hood, and its the Factory Metallic orange flake color whatever that is, Gorgeous in sunlight*

Then I needed to buy a motor, and a bunch of other nick nacks... So I started shopping for a motor and found one:

Oddly enough it came in with 4 wheels, and alot of scrap steel that managed to hobble its way home from the inner city front differential and bearing SCREAMING the whole way, but for $500, I could not complain for a 5.0, harness, ECU, Transmission, and a 3.73 Posi 31 spline disk brake rear end :)

So I also needed some custom engine brackets for my ranger since it is a 4 cylinder 2WD, So I called up my bud and he whipped these up for me:

Then of course, I also had some very ugly worn out bench seats in the ranger, along with the baller 14 inch rims, so I picked up something to take care of that as well:

And the money shot from late last week:

Just gotta pull the Differential out of the Explorer donor truck, and off to the crushers it goes, and under the knife the ranger goes :)

I've been on a TON of other boards, but figure I share my build up project on here as I was told this is a bit more of a street-truck oriented board than the ranger station.

I have a quite a few cars right now, but the ones of interest are my Daily driver, a 97 Explorer Sport, Manual, 2WD :(, that I bought off its first owner from CA to putter around in.

Then more importantly is this guy:

Because of this guy:

*old pic, frost on the hood from last year*

I'll be starting a build thread else-where :) glad to be on the boards!

I decided to bag my 89 ranger even though I said I wasnt since I already have another truck that is bagged.

I plan on using this truck for a mobile car wash/oil change service so I would like to keep the leaf spring in the back with helper bags and bag the front.

My question is what is the lb capacity the front spring can cary cause I would like to match them with a bag that will give me the same ride quality or better.

I would like to go with a sleeve bag on all fours so if theres any body out there that can recomend a bag size and knows what the stock springs are rated at tha would be cool!

Here is my truck with a 3/4 drop.

Have cleaned the MAF every couple months, put in one of those real free-flowing fancy K&N oiled air filters (probably caused the problem in the first place), kept it for a year and a half, then went back to regular paper filter.

Doesn't want to start. Have to crank for a good 5-10 seconds to get it to start. If I hit the starter for a couple seconds, then wait, it will fire up. This tells me it might be a fuel issue, like the filter is clogged, or the pump is losing pressure and is taking time to prime. I don't hear the pump when I hit the key, which then tells me the pump is fine. Check Engine light on. Haven't checked codes. Air bag light on too, probably not related.

My thoughts are that maybe I need to replace the MAF, or any of the sensors I can't remember the name for in the intake system, or replace the fuel filter.

My concern is that there is no power under acceleration. I feel like I'm driving my 82 Escort again. This thing used to really get up and go, and now I can't even pass a 63 VW Bus.

Anyone have similar problems? What is up?

I know what I'm in for asking this, but I have a chance to pick up a running '96 Ex 5.0 for under a grand.
I know the heads and intake would give me a slight horsepower increase. Anyone want to talk me into it, or out of it?

My bro is looking for a new 302 to build for his RX7, so this would be a perfect roller block for him, and he'd pay about $100. (he already has heads)

I could use the traction lock rear in my Splash, and also the half-console.

Of course, the wiring/ecu/FEAD could go in a box for my next build. (did I mention my dad has a like-new '01 XLT supercab? lol) If the Ex is 2wd, I'd be laughing.

Anyway, back to me. Spend about $500 for the heads and intake, or hold off and buy real heads?

I picked up an 02' Ranger 4.0 Auto a few weeks ago and have been driving it daily. 2-3 days ago, it had been raining the whole night and the truck started up and drove great into work that next morning..

When I went to leave work (still raining at this point), I went to start the truck and it stumbled for a few seconds then died. I tried again and same thing. I then tried again and was able to keep the truck barely idling by giving it gas, and I let off as the truck just died again.... I waited about 20 seconds, tried again and the truck stumbled but eventually cleared up after a few seconds and idled fine.

Truck has driven and started fine ever since. Still scared the hell out of me though as I JUST bought this truck and it's an 02' with 78k miles.

Anyone ever have this happen to them?

My 2nd issue is with the starter I believe. It's nothing that affects the truck starting or driving, but when I turn the truck over, after it starts, it seems like the starter is still turning for a second and makes a rattly noisy for about a second after I let go of the key.

It's almost like the starter is staying engaged for too long and is still trying to turn for just a second even after I let go of the key.

Any ideas?

98 Ranger 3.0L 4x4 mileage (lots) is unknown. My truck is new to me (several weeks) and up until now most things were o.k. - However, this morning it was about 30 degrees and the (hydraulic) clutch didn't appear to be working. The pedal moved to the floor with slight resistance but apparently not enough to disengage the clutch caus' I couldn't get it in any gear. I shut the engine off and drifted the truck and yanked it in gear. After that, all worked o.k. ? ? ?

I've never had a hydraulic clutch before - is it possible that it needs bleeding like brakes or that there is moisture in the system that froze up?

Temperature is up now - took her for a spin and everything is o.k. but it may not be tomorrow morning. Any thoughts out there?
Thanks
