Stud striped and cant get lugnut off?

I cant get my lugnut off of the front driver side wheel. It just keeps turning and turning so im guessing its stripped out. Just wondering how I would even start to get the lugnut off so i can change the studs out? or is there another way that would work for me? any help is greatly appreciated.

id think you may be able to try and put some pressure behind that lugnut while you are trying to turn it with the wheel.

if you put the other lug nuts on and tighten them down tight it will take some of the pressure off the the lug nut that is giving you problems and it may come off then. maybe grind it off if you can do that without killing your wheels?

    Cut the stud

The stud is ruined already, cut it down the center with a cut-off wheel, and split it with a chisel. Since the stud hole is stripped out, use a chisel to "ding" the hole so that the new stud will grip.

I chiseled one on my GC tore the aluminum wheel up... If you can drill it out it worked for me. I drilled a series of 1/8 inch holes around the stud at the contact point of the threads on the lug, that removed enough material, then I split the lug with a chisel, wrenched the wheel out a few times and the wheel came off. I drilled 6-8 holes around the stud and lug. then you can replace the stud. also ask at the local tire shop how they handle stripped studs with out damage to the wheel.

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. So I went to PepBoys, where I had purchased the bad lug nuts. They told me the only way they could get the lug nut off was to use a cutting torch and of course they assume no responsibility for damage to my wheels. This was right after I bought my 20s, so we were talking $500 for one wheel, tire, mounted, and balanced. YIKES!!

So, naturally I told them to F*$K off and my dad and I found a much better solution which caused no problem to the wheel. Sorry, my rant went on a little longer than I had planned.

dakota Please do tell how did you get it off... Pep Boys hmmm I dont know??? I dont trust them to work on my truck. I would only trust a good custom wheel shop (if I had 20's or such) ya know some one who specializes in custom stuff. So how did you get the lug off??? The rant was cool I often get fired up about places like that ... you know the whole big business/ stick it to the little guy customer thing gets me going...

I have lots of "big business vs. small consumer" stories that would get you plenty fired up, but we will save that for another day. Haha.

Anyway, my problem was that the head of my lug nut broke off because it was too short. This was the locking lug nut, so since the head broke off there wasn't anyway to get a socket around it. We ended up drilling two small wholes into the lug nut. The wholes were across from each other. So, then we drilled to similar wholes into an old nut and tapped in a small screw into each whole. Then we cut off the top of the screw so that the threads were sticking out. After that we were able to put the modified nut on top of the lug nut so that the threads on the nut fit into the wholes on the lug nut. Then we could turn it as much as possible. I don't know if this will help in your situation, but if it does then great!
