how to remove the bed off truck

the title tells it all. My truck was in the hit and run. It got hit, and the jurk ran, so I found a newer (2000) bed that is mint, but I never took off a bed before, I just wounder if I am getting in over my head. If any one has taken off there bed, or swapped beds before any words of wisdom would be helpful. Thanks

There are 6 bed mounts.... bolts that go through the bed.. unbolt all 6.. as well as take the tiny bolts off the gas tank filler cap... cuz it is connected to the bed as well.. and then lift the bed off.. (before you do any lifting of the bed, make sure NOTHING is attached to the bottom of the bed by any cahnce.. such as wire harness.. or anything)

Have a couple guys/girls help you lift the bed from each side to take of and replace on your truck... easy as pie son!

    Sure.

Get several T55 Torx bits and a long breaker bar.
Soak the bedbolt threads from underneath with PB Blaster for a couple days (spray several times).
Bribe a muscular friend with beer to help you take the bolts out.

Disconnect the tail light harness. It is in the middle of the bed by the tailgate, underneath.

Remove the fuel filler neck (3) screws).

    Lift off the bed.

You MAY need to remove the mudflaps and mounts if the new bed doesn't already have those installed. Since it's wrecked, wait to do that after removal, bed upside down, for ease.

I tried to take my 93's bedbolts out with a pneumatic impact wrench at the air compressor's max psi (120?ish). Those bolts LAUGHED at it making noise with no effect.
The bolts never got any easier, to the last thread I had to use that breaker bar. 1/2" drive ratchet - no way.

Hope yours are easier. You'll need a friend to help lift the new bed on. I also wire-wheeled the threads of the bedbolts so they went back in easier. You can get new nutclips from Ford, same with the bolts. They are pricey.

I recommend going right to the dealer and getting replacemnt bolts and clips before you start, especially if this is your daily driver...working in a Ford Bodyshop taught me that, inevitably, at least one bolt and clip will either be seized, or will break...
