there are no turbo kits made for the 2.9L.. there isn't much made for it at all, that is not to say it's a bad engine, but if you want an engine with a lot of bolt on performance, the 2.3L is best as Ford used turbo versions in Mustangs, and Tbirds

+1, a lot of people go with 2.3Ts cause they're made for the boost right from the factory. No kit for the 2.9L, but it has been done.

2.3 turbo on a 2.9 would yield a little small.. you would want a turbo from an engine around 3.0L, but when choosing turbo's for custom applications, you need to be able to read boost maps and things like that to choose the right turbo.. it can be done, but it's going to take some reading, planning and then some custom Fab

somthing around 3.0L will be close enough to work, but you should really learn to read a boost map, to get a really good match.. if you search google, there are sites that teach you how to read them

You also need to shoot for a power level a stock engine can safely withstand. I would NOT be just set on a turbo that came on some OEM turbocharged app just because it was also a 3.0 for example. A DOHC modern engine with 3.0 of displacement can use a huge turbo and be happy in other words. I plan to use a t3 turbo for my vulcan 3.0, acknowledging my bottom end and heads won't take more than 10psi if there is detonation. An oem 4cyl turbocharged app can boost way higher than 10psi. The tried and true t3 off the 2.3 tops out just under 300hp, much more than I plan on. If you take into consideration a remote mount turbo for example, many v6 people are happy with the t3 although they give up a little bit on the top. Also if you build a kit from scratch using a t3, and desire more output then the t3/t4 hybrids are a direct bolt-on which is nice.

Actually for a engine like the 2.9 (especially when its stock) you will want a undersized turbo. The reason is the lower rpm capability of the v6 compared to the 2.3 and a usefullness of more torque from the 2.9 at low rpm rather than high rpm hp. The increase in torque will help make your Ranger more fun at the normal operating levels your engine runs at. You will need to make more fuel available and a rising rate fuel regulator and bigger injectors will take care of that. Good luck with this if you decide to do it or if anyone else here decides to do this!!

I'm getting one together. 90% of the work I already did with a 4.0L turbo. Plan to put that stuff on the 2.9L that is in my ranger project right now.

Just waiting to hear back on the manifolds. They will get ported to match the head, and vise versa. Have the T3/T4 hybrid ready to go. Just needs a gasket rebuild.

Going to route the oil return back into the valve cover rather than into the pan like I previously had.

I have a set of 24 Lb/H injectors I will use inlpace of the 19's

Just waiting on my MS1 to get here.

It will be a spring summer project.

Wow that sounds great.. How would the return through the valve covers work?? I like the idea of a 2.9 turbo better than the 2.3 due to the torque down low with the V6 plus the sound of a turbo V6 is a bit more unique. Might do a remote mount turbo myself someday with the turbo in the bed. Good luck with yours!! My turbo is mounted up high. Just above the passenger Valve cover. Drain back should be easy.

Here is the setup on the 4.0L i was running.
