AOD & TV, can I hook the TV cable to the gas pedal?

    importracer689 is freaking brilliant.

In another thread he posted this:

i've got a better solution that wont require reworking it any time you change carbs, or removing it everytime you wanna pull your carb.

my 86 2.3 auto (a4ld) had a tv cable separate from the throttle linkage. it went to the tranny, through the firewall and directly to the gas pedal. that way its simple and easy to adjust.
if i were you i would go to a junkyard and find one like mine, put a hole in your firewall right next to the throttle cable, mount it to the pedal by drilling a hole in the cable plate and clickind it in and then forget about it

Can anyone else confirm that this will work? Is the ratio going to be right? If so, this will save me a TON of screwing around with my throttle body/bracket/etc.

I never would have thought of doing this, thank you for the idea Mark.

    Kevin

So? What do you guys say? Will it work? The reason I ask, is because I want to use my SN95 upper intake and TB, but the TB doesn't have provisions for a TV cable, as the automatic SN95's were AOD-E equipped.

From the reading I've done, the correct ratio is 1:1 for throttle:throttle valve movement. Can anyone confirm that?

It's a small thing, but I'm pretty happy about this. importracer689, I may owe you a beer or two if you ever come to my part of Canada.

You might want to pose this question to a tranny shop Kevin. You know what can happen to the tranny if the TV cable is not set correctly.
Advice is often worth exactly what you paid for it.

I'm waiting for a call back. From what I've read, as long as the 'throw' is equal to the throttle (1:1 ratio) I should be in good shape. I guess I'd just to watch where I mounted it on the gas pedal linkage, and build in some adjustability.

    hey kevin,
i took mine to my buddy's tranny shop (kinda family..kinda not)
to get the tv cable adjusted. we modified the bracket a little bit, got it clicked into it just right, and then set the pressure using the tv guage. it adjusted to spec and shifts fine. i got him to tighten it up a little so i can control shifting a little more (it will hold a gear around 3/4 throttle instead of upshifting. when you let off it shifts.

so it is working, like factory on mine, and it came that way on the a4ld so it works.

P.S>Thanks man, its always good to see somebody else take on your ideas, although this wasnt really mine, but ford's

let me know if you need any more info, like pics of where it attaches or anything.

the factory cable has an adjustment "clicker" in it. that's where you take the slack into and out of it.

Mark, I knew about the adjustability on the 'clicker'. I was talking about fine tuning the ratio to make sure it's close to 1:1.

I just got off the phone with the local auto trans shop. He says it should be fine. He stressed that I should adjust it properly etc etc, but confirmed that it should work, and the ratio I should seek is 1:1

If you wouldn't mind taking a pic of your pedal and cable that'd be great Mark. Thanks.

Do you have a website set up with pics of your installation? It seems like just about everyone has done something a little different than the next guy, and it is great to be able to share these little "tricks" with each other.

you're always on arent you? that whole moderating thing must be hard work..lol
    alright here you go man
heres where it goes into the firewall, next to the pedal with the adjustment clicker there (factory..nothing special)

here it is on the pedal (mine was a little broken before the swap, because we forgot to disconnect it and pulled on it, snapping off the plastic spacer/mount piece, thus the piece of hose and zipties, but it works, so ill leave it

and here it is on the tranny, in case you were interested

    hope that helps man

no problem man. cant wait to see it. you ever do a job, think its good, then when you see it later from a third person point of view, see how sloppy you were with little details. like i should cut off the extra ziptie, and clean up my wires more.

Alright so what u are saying is use a TV cable from a
a4ld trans. Make the hole for it in the firewall and make the hole for the cable to connect to the petal, and then u basicaly have a 1:1 ratio after fine tuning.... Good thinking of addaption to the AOD... I would definatly recomend this to be a sticky!!!
So your going to go do some muddin??? HAHA just call me when u get stuck.

yeah man, minus the fine tuning. with the throttle cable and tv cable mounted in the same place-instant 1:1 ratio

Questions about A4LD tranny TV cable

IMPORTRACER689 you said you modified the bracket. Do you mean the gas pedal bracket? Or, the cable bracket on the trans? Or, YES (both).
In the pics, it looks like you flipped the TV lever over on the trans - 180°. (from "Push" to "Pull") Did you? The donor engine I'm using is an '83 302 w/ a stock 2Bbl carb. Originally it used the solid kickdown rod from the carb linkage to the TV lever, it pushed; the cable will pull.
The Adjustment "Clicker"? Is it anything like the clutch pedal quadrant and pawl on the 'Stangs w/ the T5? Is it an automatic or manual adjustment?
The '89 4x2 2.3L that I'm converting had the Mazda 5-speed behind it. The firewall penetration is square (and plugged) in the location you have pictured. Any diff?
After reading what 351CROWNVIC had to say, I went to the Summit catalog and looked up the Lokar Kickdown Cable Part #, LOK-KD2AODHT ($54). It appears that Lokar intends for it to be hooked up at the carb linkage. Does anyone think that it can be effectively attached to the gas pedal?
Has anyone gone to the time and trouble of gathering Ford Part #'s for this adaptation? Or, should I? I figure the feedback I'll get will say something about junkyards.

What i had to modify was simply the bracket that holds the tv cable to the transmission (the one from the a4ld didnt fit the aod transmission so we got one from an aod and bent it to fit in my application right.

In the pics, it looks like you flipped the TV lever over on the trans - 180°. (from "Push" to "Pull") Did you?
No, i didnt flip it. it always pulled. I dont understand how it looks like that, but in answer to your question. no

The donor engine I'm using is an '83 302 w/ a stock 2Bbl carb. Originally it used the solid kickdown rod from the carb linkage to the TV lever, it pushed; the cable will pull.
The kickdown rod didnt go to a tv cable, but to the downshift fork inside an automatic transmission, but since yours had a 5 speed, then you shouldnt have even had a kickdown rod of any sort. not sure there, but a solid kick down rod will not function like a tv cable under any circumstances.

The Adjustment "Clicker"? Is it anything like the clutch pedal quadrant and pawl on the 'Stangs w/ the T5? Is it an automatic or manual adjustment?
I have not adjusted the clutch cable on a t5 yet, so i can't tell you if it is similar, but in order to adjust this one, you press the button and pull the cable, then hit the gas pedal until it clicks. my cousin/transmission guy showed me how to do this, but this site here explains it in several different applications. http://www.txchange.com/aodadj.htm

The '89 4x2 2.3L that I'm converting had the Mazda 5-speed behind it. The firewall penetration is square (and plugged) in the location you have pictured. Any diff?

this is the same hole, and if you grab a tv cable off of a truck so equipped it will click back in its place.

No, i do dnot believe at all that you could attach that to the gas pedal. there are plenty of people out there running lokar kickdowns to run aods with a carb, but i would hate the trouble and complication of it.
Has anyone gone to the time and trouble of gathering Ford Part #'s for this adaptation? Or, should I? I figure the feedback I'll get will say something about junkyards.
man, i would just run off to a junkyard if i were you, but if you post back here asking for it, ill go pull the part number for you for my cable if you want and i can find it.

Let me know if you have any more questions or need more information man. good luck--mark

You are correct, the original 2.3L, Mazda 5-speed manual didn't need TV. I am installing an AOD (not AODE!). I guess my question is: Do you think I could flip my lever over. Or, maybe acquire one that will fit onto the kickdown shaft that positions the fulcrum on top. Instead of pushing with a solid (adjustable) rod on the bottom, pull on the top with a cable, to actuate the downshift fork. And hook it up to the gas pedal. I don't think I'm gonna' have room for that silly rod in a Ranger.

Why not just mount the cable on the other side Wade? (loop it around)
Edit - I know the shift lever can be flipped around (cars with floor shifters had it one way, cars with column shifters had it the other way), but I don't know if you can flip the TV arm. I doubt it, but I haven't checked for myself.

Man, I hate it when someone gives the obvious solution. Yo, import dude, is the cable long enough to loop?

    hey dude,
are you talking about looping the tv cable or the shifter cable?

    okay man,
have you read the v8 swap FAQ? i wrote up how i did it
basically, you could not loop the tv cable, it pretty much has to go straight. But i guarantee you that if you put an aod in your truck and get a tv cable from a similar year ranger with an a4ld it will work and configure just like stock.

But, on my shifter cable, i used the stock floor shifter, then took the cable from my lincoln donor and looped it all the way around the transmission and hooked it back up that way it worked properly.
    any more questions?

    also,
you keep talking about a kickdown lever, but in actuality a tv cable is not a kickdown lever. It modulates all things on an aod. if you run the transmission without it hooked up, it will stack shift, i.e pulling down the road, it will shift into the highest gear possible before you get out of your driveway, or 50 ft down the road. i.e-if its in od it will be in od before you can even get moving. if you run it down in the 1 position you can drive it in first, at least i could, but you have to hook the tv cable up (and get it adjusted to the right pressure, there is a port on the side of the transmission to check it on) or the transmission will burn itself up

alright let me know if you need anything else like part numbers, or pictures, or whatever.

Mark, I'm talking about looping the TV cable. You are giving me the impression that the TV Cable is not long enough to do the loop. My donor Econoline used a Kickdown Rod. TV Cables and Kickdown Rods actuate bassackwards. Either, I find a way to flip the TV Control Lever over (maybe make one?) or if the cable is long enough, loop it around and come in from the backside.

Question: Are all AODs created equal?

"The kickdown rod didnt go to a tv cable, but to the downshift fork inside an automatic transmission"

Can I use use the TV Cable to actuate kickdown???

If it's an AOD it is a Throttle valve, not a kickdown.

    Is it an AOD?
