If it's not the IAC or TPS...what could it be?

Vehicle: 2004 Ranger XLT 4x4 4.0L SOHC Ext Cab Step side 5 speed w/129k

What's done to it: Flowmaster Catback, K&N Air Filter

No Check Engine Light (CEL)

Here's the issue: Say I am cruising or just trying to shift and the RPM is at about 1800-2200, When I push in the clutch (and let off the gas) the RPM's will jump up to around 3200 and hold for about 2 seconds, then drop to around 2500 for a second or so, then 1500 and then finally down to 800-900 (by this time I'm stopped). Speed, engine temp, and outside temp seem to have no effect on it.

I have tried to replace the IAC and TPS. I tried taking the Mass Airflow Sensor out and cleaning it with rubbing alcohol. I put new plugs in, and it didn't make a difference.

I am questioning EGR Valve, but am most expecting a hard to find vacuum leak. I tried spraying Ether (starting fluid) around vacuum lines and intake to see if I noticed a difference, and didn't.

Has anybody else had this issue? What else could it be? How else can I diagnose and find a vacuum leak?

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's some pics:

There's your problem right there in the last photo ... that engine bay is way too clean !

But in all seriousness, I'm not completely sure about your problem but if your engine RPMs spike when the clutch is released and the accelerator is depressed it would seem like there is an electrical issue. I don't know, if you've already checked said components, I'd be weary of you finding anything wrong aside from something like a sensor.

Sounds like TSB 05510. I had to get someone with alldata to get the spcific tsb info.

I had the same problem, TSB 05510 fixed mine. The dealer had to reload the computer.

Okay, so basically I need to go to Autozone so they can tell me what TSB 05510 means? What do you mean the dealer had to reload the computer?

I haven't replaced the PCV yet, and will probably try that first. I don't know why, but the last couple times I have driven my truck it has done it less. But still doing it here and there.

Thanks for the help.

AutoZone isn't going to have Ford tech data, go to a Ford garage.
Reload the computer = reflash it. Just like a USB stick. Be sure to throw a fit so they do it for free.

The PCV is a waste of $$. Tell your wife that's what you're doing & skip over to a bud's house with a 12 pack & watch a hockey game. Both will equally help your truck run better, but the latter is more fun.

I see.

Okay, so the previous post said find somebody with Alldata, which would be Autozone. Also, "reflashing my computer" wouldn't disconnecting the battery for ten minutes reset it?

Thank you, and it's a K&N and I just cleaned it a long with the MAF. I did notice that it is better but still there

This statement proves you have absolutely no idea how a vehicle works, so why do you feel the need to give out stupid information? You were also too lazy to even bother researching the symptoms & information.

No, for the same reason removing a USB stick from the port doesn't refresh the data contained.

You'll have to go to a Ford garage to get the updated bin flashed, so there's not really much sense in going to AZ.......

mxracer652,

I appreciate your advice on the situation. However, putting down others advice is not needed. A bad PCV could cause this issue, and I am sure if the airfilter was clogged AND I had a vacuum leak, a symptom such as mine COULD be possible. Likewise with a EGR sticking or not closing all the way. In my particular situation I am not thinking that it is the PCV or EGR, and am sure that the recommended TSB is probably my issue. Please feel free to offer advice on these boards, but do not belittle other people or there advice.
